Loyal audience and cheeky campaign helped Karl win

"People do get to know and feel that they want to get behind you," says Gold Logie winner Karl Stefanovic.

Accusations about Karl Stefanovic’s Gold Logie win being the result of an aggressive Nine campaign began the instant he won.

In online forums and radio, surprised viewers point towards the “Presidential-style campaign” mounted by Nine. As the sole Gold nominee for Nine, he enjoyed massive advertising, including endorsements from Hugh Jackman and Russell Brand.

On the Red Carpet, TV Tonight asked Stefanovic about the rise of morning television stars as evidenced by votes for both Today and The Circle stars.

“It’s testament to the fact that we have loyal viewers,” he said of the Today audience.

“And more than any other show on the schedule people get to know us, so you can’t help but be yourself on a morning show because you’re doing hours on air. It’s very intimate. There’s no more intimate TV than breakfast television. People do get to know and feel that they want to get behind you.

“We’re not playing characters, we’re just being ourselves so I think it’s harder for the actors to show their personality. But shows like Packed to the Rafters have got massive support. They’ve got 1.8 million. So it just goes to show if you’re doing quality stuff in this country people will watch no matter what station it’s on.”

As to those “Vote for Karl” ads he said:

“I said to them, ‘Listen if you’re going to do a campaign make sure it’s a p*sstake.’ I’m a journalist and this is a fun thing and I wanted it treated that way. They did that and I thought it was pretty funny.”

Stefanovic had only just landed back from London before the Logie broadcast and was due to host Today the morning after.

“It’s the era of Channel Nine, they want us on 24/7 if they can.”

  1. The Daily Telegraph is reporting today that Karl and his fellow Today show mates were playing up on a Qantas flight to London last week. Sounds like the antics of a group of naughty school boys again.

  2. Thanks KFed. Fair enough I suppose. But Ch 7 may want to re-think that strategy cause it seems to be giving a dream run to Ch 9 to plug its star with the handy Aus Idol style voting graphic straight after the interview.

  3. @paultv Channel 7 have a long-standing tradition of “boycotting” the red carpet – that is, they send their stars at the last possible minute so that they miss Nine’s red carpet special.

  4. I fully support Karl and his Today broadcasts are one of a kind. I truly believe he deserved those Logies.

Let’s not forget that other networks were advertising as well. This just proves that Nine puts more effort into their work such as this promo.

  5. Anyone else notice that while Karl was interviewed near the start of the red carpet broadcast, the channel 7 nominees were interviewed near the end (that us, just before the voting lines closed). I have no problems with KS winning – I actually think he is one of the more likable personalities and and after all thar is what the vote is – but I just find this sort of pettiness between the major networks pathetic.

  6. How much did channel 9 spend on SMS votes?..He is so arroagant and hates it when others make fun of him on air..He reminds me a of a head prefect of a pprivate boy’s school..

  7. @Aaron- the Logies have always been like that. Everyone in the industry knows stories of agents, PR people and assistants buying every last TV Week magazine to fill in their client’s name. Nowadays they do the same thing, but just in a different medium. The Logies are as genuine as Jack Black winning best actor at The MTV Movie Awards or iCarly winning best TV show at The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. There is a reason why the Emmies and the BAFTAs are so prestigious in American and Britian respectively and why the Logies aren’t. Campaigns like Karl’s proves that…

  8. Maybe if 7 had promoted the selections from their network maybe the result would have different. 7 most likeley assumed Rebecca Gibney would win. Typical 7.

  9. He just won an award for being Outstanding and then finished his speech with a typical male comment and reversed how oustanding he is.

  10. Karl’s comment about the Gold Logie campaign: “make sure it’s a p*sstake… this is a fun thing and I wanted it treated that way”. This just prooves everyones point. No longer is the Gold Logie a coveted award. It is basically a contest to see which network stages the best p*sstake!

  11. LOL!!! Most people I have spoken do asked the same question when the winner was announced on the news: “Who’s that?”” (lol!!) What a joke…..

  12. Whether or not it was because of a massive campaign effort by nine or not. People still voted for him. The fans of the other nominees knew their fav was running and could have voted for them.

  13. Karl is correct. He is himself. Actors play a role written for them. People only know the character, not the person. Despite the advertising campaign, people still had to decide for themselves to sms or call to vote. That costs money. Nine didn’t force anyone to do that. Anyone rubbishing the process is just calling the viewers stupid. It is just like the attacks on Chrissie Swan. She is a lovely person and you can tell that on screen. If Adam Hills had won, there would be no negativity, yet he essentially does exactly what Karl and Chrissie do. It astounds me that people love to hate on people and bring them down.

  14. Well if he’s crediting breakfast tv audiences to his Logie win, i wonder if he still intends on moving from the early timeslot.

Although since he has it already, his ego probably doesn’t need to be fed anymore and may get out of the Today show as soon as he can
