The Nine Network is poised to announce a new drama series.

TV Tonight understands Nine is close to announcing the new series to be produced by Screentime.

Screentime already has a long track record with Nine having produced the Underbelly series. Nine execs are now getting their first look at an episode of Underbelly: Razor.

The Sydney-based production company is also busy with Cloudstreet (Showcase), Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms (TEN) and Crownies (ABC).

Nine’s new drama series will be a one hour format, although it isn’t yet clear how many episodes have been commissioned.

  1. @ gasbo

Do you watch Fringe on ch 99 ? Or do you wait for the DVDs? Just curious. I’ll admit I only caught the Pilot on Nine. But saw the series mainly on GO! Because I hope you still watch.

  2. The Nine network has spent years messing up my viewing habits, the straw that broke the camel’s back was their shabby handling of the first season of Fringe, that is when I stopped watching Nine’s prime time programming. I stopped watching their news (Brisbane) after the shabby treatment of Rick Burnett (Brisbane Extra) and John Schluter (weather)

They can make as many drama programmes as they like, hell will freeze over before I ever watch anything they produce or put to air, it was hard to stop watching Sea Patrol but I did. The exceptions are NRL and Cricket, those are recorded and watched at a later time

  3. mcclouds daughters:the next generation? I’m sure it’ll be a legal/medical/cop/fireman/rescue procedural. Definitely won’t be anything unique. Unless…..the make a series based on their upcoming zombie tv movie?
My money is on a legal procedural, leading on from that legal show that aired this week starring Lisa whats-her-name from sea patrol.

  4. Can someone tell me whatever happened to the revamped version of The Young Doctors Ch 9 announced they were going to do a few years ago?

There seemed to be a big fanfare for it and then…..nothing. I can see a time where revamped versions of old soaps appear – nothing like a ‘brand name’ to lure people in……

  5. There are teams of people who are prepared to deliver what Nine drama want . Screentime, McElroys, Southern Star all prepared to tick Nine’s boxes – but it leads to unwatchable drama. Sea Patrol barely made 600,000 last night, 15% share at 8:30. It wont be there next Monday. Isn’t it time for some fresh ideas?

  6. @ben – you have to be kidding- who on earth want to see or hear or read about any of the ibrahims ever again- they are a bore – nine news seem to think people give a rats about them – if the media igorned them they might go away……

  7. Nine need to keep their hands off Screentime as they develop the proposed series. Unfortunately, this probably won’t happen, but on a positive note, the Screentime people are good and experienced at standing their ground and can argue against the duds who inhabit drama at the network. The first Underbelly proved that.
Generally, the result of nine’s influence and track record in areas such as casting, wardrobe and script editing to name a few, is appalling. How many more dramas can they fit Lisa McCune into on air at the same time? Look at the production styling and indeed the casting of Cops LAC – completely unbelievable, with no resonance to real life. If you saw Blood Brothers last Sunday night, think about some of the casting – the ages of some of the characters – in one case, they had the same young blonde actress play herself 20 years later – and she looked no different!
Then cast your mind back to The Strip – if ever there was a show that proves my point – it’s this. Nine obviously wanted a CSI Miami clone. The attitude and interaction of the characters was false, wooden and lines cliched. The casting, again, youth and fashion over substance and ability. The police procedures – completely unrealistic. But then, look at the track record of the production company and it’s principals and heads of department. The production company is one of our finest – look at Wildside and East West 101 as evidence. So how does the Strip end up like it did?
There can only be one answer – Nine programming and drama department influence and probably interference throughout the process.
Over time, these current inhabitants of the Nine drama and programming departments have condemned themselves by their mediocrity.

  8. Nine are terribly old-fashioned. Even the promising Underbelly lost its edge as it went on. The Network needs to be focussing on stories for women and use fresh, younger talent behind the scenes.

Though, getting rid of the current stench is going to be hard.

  9. My bet is somehow it will be police based… just a guess LOL

I’m amazed Cloudstreet was not picked up by FTA, were they even in the running for what is shaping up as an epic show?

  10. I have this dreadful feeling that the power-plays and drive-by shootings involving the Ibrahim families is nothing more than an audition for a new kind of reality show the 9 Network is behind…

Each member of the clan wearing those little cameras fixed to a hat/helmet (or whatever the sartorial-resplendent thug is wearing these days) as they conduct their day to day ‘activities’.

    You read it here first

  11. 9 (and ten to a lesser extent) need a complete drama overhaul. sea patrol is finishing, rescue has never rated well, and judging from the telemovie ratings Underbelly is on the way out too. 9 need to axe all 3 and commit to 2 or 3 full length (22ep) new dramas for a fresh start in 2012, shows that have some meat that can last more than a couple of seasons. and for gods sake no cop or legal dramas. although there might be room for a medical drama.

  12. Hopefully they will take Inside Out from Ten’s hands. Clearly even with new owners they want to continue making low rating flops like Rush and Offspring.
