Jay eliminated from MasterChef

MasterChef contestant Jay Huxley, who had been proving a strong contender so far this year has been cut from the contest.

MasterChef contestant Jay Huxley, who had been proving a strong contender so far this year has been cut from the contest.

The former car sales manager, 31 from Sydney, had returned to the contest after failing in the 2009 Top 50. Last night he competed against Ellie and Dani in a 90-minute challenge to cook a Pandan chiffon cake with palm sugar and black sesame ice cream.

But he got off to a shaky start when he misread the recipe and mixed milk with his eggs. With just under 40 minutes to go he was about to give up.

A devastated Huxley said, “My goals were to win a challenge early on and I did that twice and my next goal was to make the top ten. To fall short of that was disappointing.

“There was certainly a vibe among the contestants that I had a strong chance of making it a fair way and I would think there’s a sigh of a relief from some of them now!”

Huxley was left speechless when he heard the decision.

Judge Matt Preston said it was a tough decision, especially as he has displayed some of the best dishes of the series.

  1. I couldnt really stand Jay so im glad he is gone, but I have to disagree with every1 saying they want ellie to do i dont want ellie to go I want Ellie or Rachel to win. 🙂 😀

  2. Good riddance. I couldn’t stand Jay from the get go. And I am so over Ellie and her constant boo-hooing that makes the judge’s fawn all over her.

I found Dani irritating at first but she is growing on me. I really like Adam too but he’s not shown enough. Kumar and Craig are great too, the rest is so-so. I can’t stand the two ladies with the glasses and Sun.

  3. @Shelley, nope, haven’t cooked it and don’t ever plan to, it looked and sounded hideous.

Not weeping into my beer over Jay’s demise. He was so certain he was going to win, such an arrogant and superior attitude. Goodbye, thanks for coming. I hope Ellie is the next one to go, my TV screen is becoming waterlogged from her constant crying.

  4. @Moanique in Brisbane … You are dead set correct. However, he is not a Chef and I believe you have to do the work and earn the right to behave in such a manner. If you are fabulous you do get away with bad behaviour.

  5. Didn’t like Jay’s arrogance. He seemed to into himself. Confidence is great to an extent – but when you start forming impressions that you are better than your peers, and that you want it more than them – it’s not likeable. I really like Dani!

  6. Hayden will win it, but hasn;t he been out of the spotlight for many shows, glad his stupid hat is gone, but for my husband, the mum from WA , I think will be a dark horse, another Julie?

  7. Jay could not expect to progress in the comp without the ability to cook at least a basic dessert. And cake is pretty basic.

@Allie – so you’ve already downloaded the recipe and cooked it and that’s how you know it is revolting? What are you doing watching a cooking show if you’re not open to trying something a bit different?

  8. Ok Jay’s gone. Goodbye and good luck getting a job in a real kitchen with that arrogant attitude. What’s the deal with “I don’t do desserts”? Ever seen the show? Why wouldn’t you practice a couple of basic sweet things at home before you go on? Now if the next person to leave is Ellie that would be perfect. Maybe she could do an ad for a tissue company. I am so over her constant crying.

  9. To all those conspiracy theorists I really don’t think they could organise a top chef to be available the next day once they discovered who would be in the elimination. I’m sure this would need to be planned weeks / months in advance. To make for a cleaner show, I think all tastings should be blind. Jay was, in my view, rather immature and not really open to new experiences in the kitchen. His “I may as well give up” tantrum last night was pathetic (as were his attempts at cooking the night before) I expected him to lie on the floor and have a full tantrum any second (despite Gary giving him huge hints). Personally I’m barracking for Billy

  10. He was my choice to go last night, so I’m glad. He often made negative remarks about other contestants cooking, and seemed quite full of himself. Although he was very good at certain types of savory cooking he freaked out with sweet dishes and so wasn’t as well rounded as some of those left in the competition. I don’t think this years contestants are as interesting as previous years, but I guess it still early days.

  11. I’ve noticed that the people who are getting the most air time end up leaving. First there was Alex who was always having his opinion heard, he went. Then there was the pretty girl Chelsea, again always willing to tell her story, she got the boot and now Jay. Does this mean the mum from WA is next? Hope so!

I’m not sad Jay is gone. Too cocky and last night he did stuff up big time. I mean he was caught not following the recipe for goodness sake.

  12. @Ms Chastity – the black cars are just a product placement. I doubt they are actually driven straight from the set to their house. They’d be rushed straight back inside once the shots are done to do the post-show interviews (you know – the ones where it looks like they’re commenting in present tense throughout the show on what’s going on, pretending to not already know the result), debriefed, probably taken to the house to pack etc etc. I would imagine they wouldn’t return home for hours, if not days.

  13. The dessert they had to make last night was absolutely revolting, uggghh. That being said, can’t say I’m upset Jay has gone. I found him to be an arrogant know-all and it has always been made very clear in MasterChef that they are eliminated based on the item they cook for their particular challenge. Past good form is never taken into account. Jay choked badly last night and paid the price.

  14. Good riddance! He was very annoying and extremely arrogant. All he did was complain the whole time and thought that he should win every competition. I don’t get how they let him in on the show in the first place if he can’t cook dessert. Shouldn’t that be a must?

  15. Like last year(with Marion’s shock eviction), one of the strongest competitors has been eliminated way too early!
I fear that when this year’s series gets down to the last 6 or so contestants, we’ll be left with some truly mediocre performers.
Seriously, does anyone really see either Ellie or Dani as the winner?
Michael or Hayden to win the whole thing now, I predict.

  16. The issue I have with Masterchef, if they want to get rid of a contestant, then they make the elimination round on the that persons weakness, i.e Jay, if he wasn;t the nest cook there, I’ll go he, love to see the “so called” super chef hosts make that dish well..

  17. Anyone else notice that when he left the MC kitchens he was driven away in a black sponsors car. When he arrived home, he was in a yellow cab.
I’m wondering where about in sydney ( where Jay lives ) the MC crew dumped him on the street to find his own way home.

  18. I enjoyed Jay in the competition always presented a meal of “restaurant standard”
is it not a coincidence that a dessert challenge was picked for him to compete in. There are many in this group of contestants who cannot cook and I wonder why they chose to eliminate Jay so early in the competition. No more Masterchef for me.

  19. Punishing great contestants for doing one wrong thing, and letting poor contestants survive for doing one good thing at the right time, is a real flaw with this show. So much for being a ‘meritocracy’ as Matt Preston said.

  20. The luck of the draw or how the producers set the stage methinks. Besides. so many brilliant cooks left in. look at Kumar or what’s her name.
