Masterchef contestant unable to clear name

Spoiler: After last week's scandaal broke, the father of a MasterChef contestant complains about the treatment of his son.

Spoiler: After the MasterChef scandal surrounding contestant Mat Beyer broke last week, he has been staying at a motel under the directions of FremantleMedia Australia, according to his father.

Michael Beyer, told The Sunday Telegraph his son was no cheat, and had been unable to clear his name because the producers had silenced him.

“He has been told not to say anything so they must have something in the wings or want to boost their ratings in some way,” Mr Beyer said.

“They’ve got him holed up in a motel room somewhere – and I can only talk to him when he rings.

“I can tell you now he did not cheat and he was not using his phone to access recipes or anything like that.

“He just made an error of judgment in taking a phone into the kitchen.”

A search of his mobile phone logs by the producers had reportely proven that Beyer was not using the phone to cheat. But having the phone in his possession would have been a breach of the rules.

Last week former contestant Marion Grasby said, “You are constantly told, in no uncertain terms, that if you break the rules that they can boot you from the show.

“We don’t know if he did cheat but if he did have the phone, that’s definitely a huge breach.”

There is speculation that there is more to the story than has been revealed thus far.

Judge George Calombaris praised Beyer as a cook this week, but he wouldn’t be drawn into what actually happened.

  1. Has anyone verified the father’s comment that he is “holed up in a motel room”? It sounds unbelievable. What happens if he leaves? Do the producers fall out of the sky like ninjas to stop him leaving. I can understand a gag clause in a contract but this isolation tactic doesn’t make sense.

  2. He cheated by having the phone, full stop, end of story.

Whether or not he looked anything up is besides the point completely.

If he cannot even follow a simple rule why should he deserve to win 100k plus whatever other spoils are offered.

  3. This is a guy that couldn’t even cook a steak in the Mean Fiddler challenge, but he was not willing to put his name forward for elimination. This guy is one of those school boys that always winges to the teacher “it wasn’t me sir, he started it!”.

  4. What is this, the Gulag Archipelago? What gives the producers the right to hold this bloke as a prisoner in a hotel room with nobody able to contact him???? Unbelievably heavy handed and absolutely ridiculous. It has been done for the sole reason of fomenting controversy for ratings. If he was found with a phone in breach of the rules, fine, fire him from the show and be done with it. But this idiotic drama for drama’s sake saga it has become is a complete turn-off. I have hated MC this season, and this only perpetuates my dislike of it more.

  5. He may have broken the rules, but i’m sure there would be nothing in his contract that allows the producers to keep him virtual prisoner in a motel. I agree with other commenters, this is just a ratings grab. The situation could have been handled without controversy once they discovered he hadn’t accessed any recipes. I use to like MC, but now that I can see it is more contrived than ever I don’t bother watching it.

  6. It’s not about cheating. It’s about breaking the rules. What part of “no phones” didn’t he understand? He took his chances, he’s paying the price. And of course he has to stay low. No doubt he’ll be able to talk his head off when the episode goes to air. I’ll bet it’s the same for all the contestants who leave the show – no talking till your story has happened in TV Land – where none of this has happened yet.
