Matt Lucas and David Walliams parting ways?

Update: No more Come Fly With Me? Not quite. But it might be a little time in the waiting lounge.

UK comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams are reportedly splitting and will pursue separate projects.

The pair, best known for their riotous Little Britain series, were due to work on a second series of Come Fly With Me but this is now believed to have been shelved.

The Sun reports Walliams, 39, is now developing a classroom comedy in which he plays a harassed teacher, the first series he has written without Lucas.

Lucas, 37, who returns to Les Miserables in London’s West End next week, is to front The Matt Lucas Awards, a BBC1 comedy in which he hands out “alternative” gongs.

Both have already appeared in separate works, including Frankie Howerd: Rather You Than Me, Doctor Who, Kath & Kim, The Wind in the Willows and Bridesmaids.

“They both wanted to do completely different things. Neither wants to be defined by the partnership any more. They want to be known as more than those guys that do Little Britain,” said a source.

Update: It seems The Sun gets it wrong again…..  BBC issues a statement: “A  second series of Come Fly With Me has been commissioned, but production will not commence until Matt and David have fulfilled their  other commitments.”

  1. I recommend taking whatever you read in rags like The Sun with a large bag of salt. Supposedly quoting an anonymous “source” (as opposed to their managers, agents, network producers or, heaven forbid, themselves) is always a red flag for me.

They’ve done solo projects before and I suspect that doing so allows them to return refreshed to working closely together for long periods. That said, while I think that their characterisations in Come Fly With Me are as good as ever, it isn’t particularly funny and I stopped watching after the uncensored repeat was dropped.

  2. You might want to read this tweet from Matt Lucas: twitter.com/realmattlucas/status/81319030283182080

In it he basically gives these claims the response they deserve.

  3. This isn’t true, they are just working on their own projects currently. Matt Lucas via Twitter: “Some Tweeters and newspapers assuming that because we are doing our own shows, me and Dave have split up. We haven’t!”
