No full series of Doctor Who in 2012

BBC One controller Danny Cohen recently confirmed Doctor Who will not be back for a full-length series next year.

Doctor Who was recently renewed for 14 new episodes, but BBC One controller Danny Cohen has confirmed it will not be back for a full-length series next year.

Some episodes will air in 2012 but others will be aired in 2013, potentially as part of a “special run” during its 50th anniversary.

The remaining six episodes of the current season are expected to air in the UK in September.

Showrunner Steven Moffat recently admitted he did not know when the next 14 episodes will go out.

  1. As far as I’m concerned Doctor Who will probably go down in history as one of the most popular TV shows of all time!! When it’s not on TV I don’t really watch at all. I’ve been a fan of the series since Peter Davison was the Doctor and down here in Australia it’s never been more popular. Why do spoilt little shithead w*nkers post how much they don’t like the show? If you don’t like it don’t bloody watch it and stop trying to ruin it for everybody else!! As for split seasons etc. I’m not that fussed, I still pinch myself whenever I new one is on Telly!

  2. Thank god. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for this silly little show. It really is the worst thing on TV. How any person over the age of 16 can find it entertaining is beyond me.

  3. @Des & Adam: I strongly disagree with you that Doctor Who is rubbish and between 5 & 10 Million of my British friends, 1 & 2 Million of my American friends, almost a million of my Canadian friends and at least 840,000 of my fellow Australians also disagree with you.

If you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all.

  4. Yes Adam go away if you have noting constructive to add to the conversation!

The show can’t be too bad lasting 50 years it’s still one of the best SciFi around and if you don’t like the show then why bother taking the time to post about it here.

  5. @ Adam of Brisbane I kind of agree with you, I don’t think the new series of Dr Who is quite up to the standard of the old series since it came back in 2005. It was the likes of Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee in the 70’s that gave it a huge following and propelled it to the success it is today.

  6. It’s my interpretation in looking at the various discussions and reading between the lines on TV forums on the web is that what Moffat and the BBC are going to do is push back and stagger the 12 episodes (the 13th is the 2011 Christmas special) so that there will be actual episodes on the anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who- that is 23 November 2011. So a hypothetical schedule is that mid or late-summer 2012 (UK) there will be a half season, the 2012 Christmas special, and then around March 2013 or so the second half season. This will give way to the 50th anniversary season in late autumn, culminating in the story broadcast on the 23 November weekend (Saturday coincidently being the day of 23 November.)

Normally what the BBC would do is say that a season of XX episodes has been approved. By being smarty-pants and not saying that it’s a season leads me to believe the above may well be the case. You see, nothing’s been announced for the 50th anniversary season yet…

  7. @ Adam …. Doctor Who is not rubbish because it has excellent ratings all around the world and has been going (in one form or another) for 50 years in 2013 … that is unbeatable! So go away!

As for the messed up seasons … damn 50th anniversary, messing up our regular viewing, how dare they! :-)))

  8. Damn it. It’s bad enough that they have split the current season in two. Seven episodes at a time just doesn’t feel satisfying, and the special’s are even more annoying.

  9. It amazes me that people who have no interest in a particular show/personality etc. still take the time to read the article and post a comment! Why bother?! What purpose does it serve? Does trashing something that other people like make them feel better about themselves? I just don’t get it. This is disappointing news, but as others have said, at least the series itself hasn’t been “frozen” – that would be a disaster! Really looking forward to the second half of this season!

  10. The (not so) funny thing is that Doctor Who brings in much more money than it costs, but because of the nominally non-commercial way the BBC is set up they’re not allowed to consider that when working out funding.

  11. I heard about this a few days ago, it reminds me of David’s last season which was a series of specials. I just hope the good stories continue and I guess in the next few weeks we do have Torchwood to look forward to.

  12. Well… that sucks… I was hoping for at least 2 more full seasons after this one concludes later this year before they went back to that (not full season). But I guess with the BBC’s budget freeze it was likely to happen. I doubt it’s the cheapest production.
