Axed: Rescue Special Ops won’t be renewed

The Nine Network has confirmed it will not be renewing Rescue Special Ops for a fourth season.

The Nine Network has confirmed it will not be renewing Rescue Special Ops for a fourth season.

A Nine spokesperson told the Sunday Telegraph, “Rescue has been a much loved drama and Nine has decided this will be its final season.

“It ends while  it’s still going strong.”

This year saw the third season boosted from 13 episodes to an impressive 22 eps. with episode 16 set to air tomorrow night.

Produced by Southern Star, its producers Julie McGauran and Sarah Smith are also producing Wild Boys for Seven -one of its first non in-house productions in a long time- plus a telemovie Dripping with Chocolate for BBC Worldwide.

The exit of Rescue follows that of Sea Patrol after 5 seasons but Nine’s drama slate is still quite buoyant with Underbelly: Razor, Beaconsfield, Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket all yet to air, and a rumoured new drama from Screentime tipped to be announced.

New telemovie Sundowner will also be produced by Cordell Jigsaw.

  1. There goes another one of my favourite Aussie dramas. First City Homicide, then Sea Patrol and now Rescue.
I’m sorry to see Rescue go. I thought it was pretty good.
What is Nine going to replace it with?

  2. actually i never watched the show…not with NCIS and so on…maybe we should just channel all the American networks here….. that would save alot of hassel…or even toe our great country over to the USA….. the best thing about Rescue was the blonde in that pic…..

  3. sad that so many actors will be out of work…. only to turn up in another show that will be axed again…what this country needs is some new acting blood….

  4. Another quality Aussie drama bites the dust. Resue could no longer be rescued; Sea Patrol has gone to a watery grave. At least we have the new series of Rush to look forward to.

  5. Such a shame another Aussie Drama is being discontinued. People use to rave about Police Rescue years ago, and surely RSO was equal to if not better than that. I for one thought the production quality of RSO was very good and the acting was nowhere near as bad as commenters are saying.

  6. I will miss it! It had got better as it progressed! Not always perfect, but I enjoyed the characters and acting! The cast have done a great job!

  7. Looking forward to Nine’s new action series ‘Rescue Current Sea Special Ops Patrol Block Affair’ starring Lisa Wilkinson and Gary Sweet.

  8. I have watched all 3 Seasons, I think 1 & 2 were fine, they worked best as 13 ep Seasons, it makes for tighter storytelling. Surprised they went with 22 eps for the 3rd, mistake, doubling up eps a week, rarely works for any show. Also, Season 3 was a hit and miss situation, one ep would be good, next one could be a shocker, they should of stuck with a 13 ep Season 3.

What 9 still has, Underbelly, and the 2-new mentioned, plus telemovie, doesn’t interest me at all. With RSO gone, they only thing left on 9/90/99 is CSI Miami & TBBT for me, and I mean 24/7 re brand 9, not just drama. 9 being no. 2 in the Country means nothing to me. The un-named drama mentiond may interest me.

  9. Never really saw it but I do miss the 9 of when Kerry Packer was alive.Monday nights always had something entertaining on and none of these crime shows or police dramas. Why not a game show each week(Non Eddie Hosted of course)and a feel good family friendly show afterwards it worked in the past so why not now.

With good news week gone there’s practically nothing good worth watching on a Monday Night 8:30pm anymore SBS offerings are a joke currently and who knows what 7 plan to replace the Amazing Race with after this week and 4 Corners only really watch that as a last resort.

  10. I hated seasons 1 and 2 from the snippets I saw but this season I saw the first episode and thought it had improved a lot and I’ve watched every episode since. Still not surprising it is not being renewed.

  11. Hooray! Finally, this show really shouldn’t have lasted past the first season. With Sea Patrol also gone looks like Nine’s drama slate is looking pretty bare for next year. They should pick up Inside Out now that it’s been passed on by Ten and make it into the new Prisoner and together with Underbelly they will have 2 crime dramas.

  12. I tried Rescue when it first aired and hated its guts. This season has been far better and I actually got hooked. Shame it didn’t get recognision during its airing. 800,000 in todays ratings is still pretty good, equivelent to 1.4 mil during the non-multichannel environment.
Same with Stingers, never got fantastic ratings but was a terrific show.
I wonder what Nine will replace it with? Hopefully something a little more popular.
