Billy back into MasterChef as Mat is booted

MasterChef throws Bily Law a lifeline after Mat Beyer admits to breaking the rules.

After being eliminated from MasterChef on Monday night, Billy Law is back in the game.

Law, 34, was thrown a lifeline in the TEN cooking contest after Mat Beyer, 24, was told to leave the series for breaching the rules.

Beyer admitted to having a smart phone during his time in the house for six weeks. Contestants are denied and internet because it can give them an advantage in accessing information, including recipes and ordering ingredients.

“I did the wrong thing and I deserve to go,” he admitted.

“I think it was the wrong thing to do and I think it was a rash decision, but I made a stupid mistake and I guess I’m paying for it now.”

But Beyer insists he didn’t use the phone to access recipes, but as a way of keeping in touch with his girlfriend.

TEN claims if a contestant has a personal issue access to phones and face-to-face contact with loved ones is reassessed. The production also provides a psychologist and certain breaks for weekends or holidays.

But following speculation about his exit some weeks ago, media has reported he has been ‘holed-up’ in a motel with his father complaining about limited access to his son.

Today the Herald Sun details that Beyer’s mother has been a missing person since 2004 and that an inquiry into her death, which can happen after 7 years, was being started.

“I knew it was going to come up to Mother’s Day and then her birthday. I was feeling a bit emotionally vulnerable and one 10-minute phone call a week wasn’t really cutting it,” he says.

“I decided to take the phone into the house to keep in contact with my girlfriend.”

The exit of Beyer has highlighted the extremes of management of Reality TV contestants by producers, both during and after their time on the show.

A TEN statement says Beyer has since been offered psychological assistance and ‘access to a cooking apprenticeship job interview’ to help him further his career.

Billy Law is already back in the competition last night being credited with creating the best dish in the competition.

  1. @NJK, yeah, I agree, they have cooked a hell of a lot of pork belly/pork dishes this year. I wonder if the association that represents Australian pork producers has some sort of sponsorship thing happening?

  2. If I see another pork belly dish I am going to turn up my toes and oink. And how predictable were the winners/losers, yet again? The blue team all looked down in the dumps for every interview throughout the show, whereas the red team were all smiles. It was pretty obvious who had come out on top well before the winner was announced.

  3. Rules are flipping rules and I am sick to death of people who think they are above the rules or that they don’t apply to them for some reason.

I have no issues with this at all. I would, however, love to know who dibber dobbered on him – they deserve a medal.

  4. It was great to see Billy back and he slid in beautfiully and cooked the perfect pork.

Matt is on the 7pm project tonight so I guess he will say more there. But why didnt he just explain the situation to the prodcuers about his mum. Im sure they would have understood.

  5. Pathetic excuse! Come on! If he wanted more phone time then he should have asked instead of breaking the rules, i rem a few weeks back that danni asked for extra time and she rang her father for inspiration. I’m just glad billy is back:)

  6. I find it pretty mean by the producers of the show to boot him for this. Its not as if they dont already have access to cooking books with the accomodation provided. A warning would probably been more suitable.

10min phone call to love ones? Sounds like prison conditions.

  7. The situation with his mother does sound sympathetic but then again, don’t enter a competition if you aren’t willing to play by the rules.

I don’t agree with them having internet access. Imagine if they did and came across this blog? With all the comments of conspiracy and favouritism along with attacks of the contestants being as bland of home brand toilet paper… the psychologist bill would run into the millions for TEN

  8. Mat was on radio this morning. Basically he admitted he had a phone but had no idea how the producers found out. He seemed a bit bitter, but had a quick plug for his Blog site!! (typical).

This seemed to be typical of Mat in the show. Not willing to accept wrong and when he did wrong (pub challenge etc) Not willing to put his name forward for elimination.

  9. Mat was able to say goodbye to the contestants and they filmed Matt Preston telling the others After Mat had left. That probably explains their reactions…

  10. @Xavier, I was also struck by the other contestants lack of real surprise or concern. Either they are pathetic actors or they didn’t really care much for Beyers and were relieved to see the back of him.

I do not understand why they are so tough on the contestants with regards to contacting their families. Ten minutes once per week is disgraceful and nowhere near enough time to speak to loved ones. I do not have a problem with them having mobile phones, as long as they are not internet enabled smart phones.

@googly eyes, I had a smartphone, but absolutely hated it. Too complicated and annoying to use and the data cost was horrendous. No thank you, if I want the internet, I’ll use my laptop. I have gone back to my old trusty Samsung.

  11. Interesting to see this story in various media outlets being specific about the phone being a smartphone. If he was missing his girlfriend couldn’t he have just used a simple non-smartphone? Then again, who doesn’t own a smartphone these days? Great to have Billy back though!

  12. Simple – rule hating Emo dude tries to put one over on ‘the man’ and loses out. Then has to watch everyone jet off to New York. Good plan Emo dude.

  13. The whole thing pathetically staged when the two Matts had their “talk”. You could practically see the nervous smile on contestant-Matt’s face when acting out the scene with judge-Matt. The lack of information was also rather strange, until I saw the promos for Negus and The Project, both with interviews. Milking it much?

  14. Why not let them all have a phone in future seasons? I don’t see how cutting them off from everything improves the contest. It may have been the point of Big Brother, but this is a cooking contest. They can’t really get an advantage since the show is in production a month ahead of airing. There are no public votes so communicating with fans online can’t hurt. It’s all very weird.

  15. Surely there’s more to the story here. The reaction of the other contestants to his exit suggests to me one or a few of them had known about the phone and snitched on Billy or at least brought it to the producers attention. Would have preferred to see that on the incorporated into the story line.
