Hayden in shock MasterChef elimination

"Series favourite" Hayden Quinn, 24, has been sent packing from MasterChef Australia in a shock elimination.

“Series favourite” Hayden Quinn, 24, has been sent packing from MasterChef Australia in a shock elimination.

The lifesaver has long been considered the “golden child” of the series, with his talent, good looks and media coverage.

But the elimination now throws the contest wide open in the run-up to the season finale.

Quinn faced a tough battle last night, up against formidable opponents in Michael Weldon and Kate Bracks.

After losing a group challenge the three had 90 minutes to cook whatever they wanted from an open pantry.

His sesame encrusted coral trout, with Tapioca Pearls and Garlic Cream was ruled inferior to Michael and Kate’s dishes.

“Walking into the kitchen with Michael and Kate standing next to me was always going to be a hard situation – they’re two of the best cooks in the competition I reckon,” he said.

“Maybe I cooked a too simple dish, but in hindsight I wouldn’t have done anything differently,” says Hayden. “I just did what I think was right.”

He was dish was criticised for being too salty.

“I kept thinking, ‘Oh well, at least it was Kate and Michael that beat me’,” he laughs. “I was happy with where I got in the competition – I was excited yet sad at the same time; I’d done so well but there were a lot of ‘what ifs’ and wondering what it would have been like standing at the finale. It hit me a few days later. Instantly, you’re just thinking about going home.”

Many fans of the show had expected Quinn to take out the series title, already criticising Producers for showing him favouritism. But the shock elimination mirrors that of 2010 favourite Marion Grasby in the contest’s closing stages. It’s likely to see ratings drive up as viewers are left to watch Michael, Kate, Ellie, Dani and Alana.

“When people expect you to win and keep telling you that they want you to win, it obviously puts a little more pressure on you to reach those standards,” he says. “You can only do the best you can. I achieved everything I wanted to, but I would’ve liked to win a team challenge. But I learnt so much, grew as a cook and experienced so much.”

  1. yea really shocked to see him go.. was excptng him to be in top 3.. cuz he desrved nt by his looks as he was really a good cook wish u look hayden
n we ol knw u gonna do gr8

  2. Somehow it seems that better all round cooks get eliminated throughout the series and it is usually through team challenges . That situation is based partly on luck, there has to be a better way of eliminating and dishes perhaps judged without the judges knowing who has presented it ; each week.
I am surprised that Danni, although a nice girl, has gone this far as week after week she gets in a dither and cries under pressure. . She was not a good group leader and generally , more so than others who have been sent home, makes quite a few mistakes in cooking and presentation. Keenviewer.

  3. I didn’t find it a shock, his level of quality cooking had dropped, and it finally caught up with him, and he is out. The fact he thinks he should have his own show after 5mins of fame on a cooking show, perhaps is telling of why he is out of the show as well, his ego finally tripped him up.

As for the 5 left, there really isn’t a standout amongst them. I would pick Kate or Alana, because the other 3, Michael, Dani and Ellie, have all cried there way to still be in the tail end of the show, and shouldn’t be further compensated, with any of the 3 being the final Winner. Kate would be the most honest of the 5 that are left I think, so I will go with her for being the Winner.

  4. Hey Lauren, so you think there’s no favouritism, and Daniiiiii and Elliiiiiiii are worthy of their places in the top 5. Are you serious??
This show is scripted and edited to within an inch of its life; the ‘judges’ are just part of the cast. They follow the script and are mere pawns of the producers, who make all the decisions. Unfortunately, the bosses misjudged this year in their grooming of D & E as crowd favourites as they’re both annoying, mediocre and over-exposed.
(there goes the Gen Y demographic the sponsors so prefer)
Anyway, no offence, but your gullibility makes you and others like you a producer’s dream.

  5. hahaha, ndro777, she said it, that’s for sure.
Hope michael, alana, kate in final with michael winning, I think he’s better looking than Hayden, not that looks should matter, I think he’s underrated myself.

  6. Maybe he eliminated himself? He saw how well Marion and that blonde chick on ten went and didnt want to be attached to the Masterchef brand where they take his money.

He’s already got a show in the pipeline it seems.

  7. Well, he made a mistake. I think he was off the boil a bit past few weeks and deserved to go. Not because he is not a good cook, but because he lost focus. Probably he was in too many loosing team challenges, which wasn’t always his fault. Sometimes you need a bit of luck like Kate, who scraped through most of the time for being in the winning teams.

  8. I don’t mind who wins (as long as its not Ellie). I’m not liking George’s tight pants, he hasn’t got the right body shape to wear them. Still luv ya George!

  9. I’m always amazed at the way these threads become anti Dani and Ellie fests. As a fairly impartial observer I just don’t see this alleged favouritism the conspiracy theorists speak of. In a competition that’s had some fairly dull dishes Dani’s Korean rice burger and challenge saving cupcakes have been amongst the highlights. I’ve been quite surprised that Ellie’s managed to beat so many eliminations, but every time when the pressure’s on she’s managed to knock it out of the park. For people to suggest that any one of these girls did worse than Hayden’s raw fish on Wednesday is ludicrous.

It’s a surprising top 5. In some cases better all-round chefs have been sent home, but that’s the nature of the beast. But to suggest the judges are playing favourites probably says more about how You feel about the competitors than what the judges do.

  10. Yes, like the three witches from Macbeth, the girls sit on the couch awaiting the return of the survivor of last nights challenge.
I am sure they were all cackling when they realized Haydn had gone.

  11. I think the top 5 should have been, Michael, Billy, Kate, Hayden and Alana. If Dani wins, then it’s because George has decreed it so. Elli is sweet, but like Dani, not anywhere near as experienced or deserving of the ultimate prize.
Top 3 should have been Michael, Kate and Haydon, but that is impossible, given Hayden’s elimination last night.
When it comes to editing this show, it’s apparent that Dani is in the editors suite, because she ensures she’s always on camera!

  12. Agree with comments that Hayden will receive a Media career of some sort Good luck to him !!
The final 3 should be Alana (the quiet achiever) and Michael with possibly Kate. Danni and Elle are still too inexperienced and don’t deserve to be in the top 3. IMHO both these girls have huge potential but need more training.
