@Jerome, good point. The sort of all encompassing hyping has backfired in the past, but you’re right. Coming second is no handicap and I’m sure Jack will have showbiz success in the future, no matter what.

@Moanique, thanks. His teeth really did look odd, I noticed it straight away. Maybe it is some kind of newfangled brace or retainer of some kind.

  2. Moanique in Brisbane July 15, 2011 at 11:55 pm -

@ allie, re:jacks teeth. I’ve heard he is just wearing a snap on veneer/facade type of thing that has been made up by a dentist, but not permanent.

  3. steve July 15, 2011 at 10:10 pm -

David, do you know who is looking after Ten while Lachlan is in now in the UK with the rest of the family?

It’s all so scandalous, even Elizabeth had bad words for Rebekah who has now stepped down

  4. Jerome July 15, 2011 at 7:39 pm -

@Allie, thats what was said about Anthony Callea, Adam Lambert and Susan Boyle, look what happened there. It is a point that is shown in reality tv over and over again if you hype someone up to rediculous levels, people don’t vote, and they come 2nd, which is in the best interest of all involved, coming second is by no means a handicap in a possible career and it is humbling to the performer which can be very important to their future image, no one likes someone that is good at everything, has endless luck and always comes first.

If Jack wins there will be 2million simultaneous eyerolls. if someone else wins (and there are about 10 other acts that would deserve to) it will be much better for the show.

@ Secret Squïrrel. You make my point. People are using this system to judge programs when it has nothing to do with how popular a program is, only the advertising. It is not a true indicator of who is interested in a particular television program. Most viewers are interested in programs, not advertising. People should stop judging programs based on these figures. It is a shame that networks have moved so far from what they were intended to be, a service to the community.

  8. muzza July 15, 2011 at 1:40 pm -

@Moanique in Brisbane. I pointed that out on Tuesday of this week and no one has won the week yet but seven will probably win it again. I’m just pointing out the fact that Seven who have performed well all year are starting to show some cracks. Just to give some perspective to the people who think 7 can do no wrong.

  9. A. July 15, 2011 at 12:56 pm -

What happened to Stargate Universe? Also Star Trek Next Gen. Because the former usually shows up somewhere in the list. Or did I read it wrong? I hope they show up next week. They haven’t gone down have they?

  10. David @ Green Point July 15, 2011 at 12:49 pm -

    @ Kenny
There is little or no “localism” on regional TV… perhaps (as in NBN’s case) an hourly nightly news session that consists of the days 9 News reports mixed with a sad batch of ‘local’ stories – and that’s it.

TEN (NRTV) dumped all their regional news efforts back in the early 90s followed by Prime in selected areas (Newcastle one) in the early 2000s.

These days SCTV and Prime7 have their scheduled “News Breaks”, read by heads who appear to have honed their journalistic skills on Kindergarten of the Air,

The only “localism” you’ll find are in the commercial breaks, which is the main reason we choose not to watch NBN, Prime or SCTV.

Most country TV ads are woeful, lack imagination and look pathetically cheap.

  11. catherine July 15, 2011 at 12:19 pm -

I enjoyed Masterchef last night and realised why. George wasnt in the kitchen yelling every few minutes. Mat Moran is much more controlled. also I htought Kennet the son sounded like Whoopi Goldberg. Anyway it was a good challenge.

The Desperate Housewives finale was good last night. But it was hard watching the nice father from Ugly Betty be a total opposite character who was evil and wanted to hurt Gabby.

  12. Allie July 15, 2011 at 11:55 am -

@david knox, thanks for that info. I didn’t see TT on Tuesday evening. I thought his teeth looked different, just wondered if I was imagining things!!!

  13. David Knox July 15, 2011 at 11:41 am -

TT had a story on Tuesday about Jack getting his teeth done.

  14. James July 15, 2011 at 11:32 am -

    @ Kenny.
The ratings info you see (and complain about) is top line info. Advertisers are able to drill down into endless r&f detail. All markets are seperate, regionals are included under regional TAM.

RegionalTAM is the official source for regional television ratings. It covers – regional Queensland, northern NSW, southern NSW, regional Victoria, Tasmania and regional Western Australia.

If you really want to see more get yourself a subscription to OZTAM and access to an analysis system.

  15. Allie July 15, 2011 at 11:19 am -

Did anyone see the TT segment last night of Jack Vidgen meeting Hollywood blogger Perez Hilton? Were my eyes deceiving me or has Jack had veneers put on his teeth? They looked much bigger and whiter than I remember and he did not appear comfortable as I noticed he was manoeuvring his top lip over his front teeth a few times. Just looked odd to me. Could Seven make it any more obvious that they want Jack to win AGT???? The other contestants may as well go home now, the eventual result is done and dusted, really.

  16. Kenny July 15, 2011 at 10:58 am -

@Secret Squirrel @TDJ (& others) – “it’s been said before but the ratings system is not for people to use as some sort of sport. Its sole purpose is to inform potential advertisers how many people might see their ad”
Exactly right! which is why the “Network” figures are bogus. If my ad. is on TCN9 I want to know how many were watching TCN9, not a bogus figure of Nine+Gem+Go.
@TDJ – NBN, SCTEN and Prime also have translators serving the Central Coast, as well as the Sydney stations now having translators there. My point is that Central Coast viewers now have regional transmitters in their backyard, thus eliminating the need to watch Sydney stations if they prefer localism.

  17. Moanique in Brisbane July 15, 2011 at 10:47 am -

@ muzza, oh you said the same thing last week, yet Seven still won the ratings week…..again. Hopefully your channel will get a win soon and you will be put out of your misery.

  18. muzza July 15, 2011 at 6:58 am -

Wonder what the Channel 7 lovers are saying now. Third overall. Are there cracks appearing????

  19. Harry July 14, 2011 at 11:27 pm -

Offspring was Awesome last night. That is all.

  20. Secret Squïrrel July 14, 2011 at 8:39 pm -

@TDJ (& others) – it’s been said before but the ratings system is not for people to use as some sort of sport. Its sole purpose is to inform potential advertisers how many people might see their ad, and to allow networks to charge appropriately. If you’re not watching their ads then they don’t want to count you.

  21. Moanique in Brisbane July 14, 2011 at 6:24 pm -

I watched Offspring last night because i’d read Tina Bursill was making a guest appearance. Tina’s performance was great, but the show in general is terrible. Such boring storylines imo.

  22. JamesJ July 14, 2011 at 6:09 pm -

David, out of interest what does Toasted TV get, approximately? I’d be interested to know how it goes up against Sunrise and Today. Cheers

  23. TDJ July 14, 2011 at 4:45 pm -

@ Kenny. The ratings system is questionable regardless. Why people make such a big deal out of a flawed system is beyond me. It certainly does not generate quality programming or in fact make the networks any less incompetent. According to some people no one records programs, so you must be in a minority. Of course we know that recorded programs are not counted in ratings. As people like myself record many programs, especially when they stick them on at the same time, the ratings are irrelevant.

  24. David @ Green Point July 14, 2011 at 1:11 pm -

    @ Kenny:

Sydney TV signals are relayed to Central Coast via sticks at Gosford and Bateau Bay/Long Jetty.

I’m happy that we can enjoy Sydney commercials… if we decided not to edit them out of the hard drive recordings we make of the programmes….

  25. Allie July 14, 2011 at 12:30 pm -

@pete, yes, a very good episode of MCA last night. That bit at the start when George, Matt and Gary spoke to the contestants from the big screen in Times Square was fantastic!!! Very inspired idea, I wonder how much it cost them to hire that screen for three hours? I note it had the News Ltd logo scrolling along it, so maybe they sponsored it. Didn’t agree with the outcome, though. Kate and Michael did not finish their dish, they should be the ones in the elimination round (in my opinion).

  26. John July 14, 2011 at 10:58 am -

Can people direct their questions about the data collection methodology of OzTam actually TO Oztam? It would make a lot more sense. OzTam actually does offer other stats for a fee. If you’re that interested, subscribe to to their service.

  27. Kenny July 14, 2011 at 10:11 am -

Before aggregation everyone in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong had Sydney antennae and watched Sydney stations, there being only one commercial station in Ncl and W’gong. Now, no one watches Sydney and everyone watches WIN/Prime/SCTEN via the local transmitters. A huge loss to Sydney advertisers.
Same of course in rural Vic, Qld, SA, WA etc.
Don’t know how any metropolitan stations measure their audience as never see anything. Makes the capital-cities-only rating system a bit questionable.

  28. bettestreep2008 July 14, 2011 at 9:52 am -

pete – totally agree with you re last nigh’s MC episode.

as for Top Design – didn’t watch it myself – but seems a lot of people love Nine’s home renovation shows so they must be doing something right.

  29. chk chk July 14, 2011 at 9:42 am -

I liked Top Design last night, most of the contestants are really good looking, will definitely watch again next week!

  30. Jezza July 14, 2011 at 9:29 am -

Oh no the nightmare scenario has happened, prepare for renovation overload. CH9s wednesday night win with 2 reno shows in the top 5 will result with the programmers going into overkill. How many nights a week was 2½ men shown when it rated well, 10? 15? maybe 20?. You have been warned, you know what they are like

  31. tmorgan July 14, 2011 at 8:59 am -

What I don’t understand is why OZTAM need to only include the capital cities. I think the ratings system should include everywhere that shows are avaliable.
Decent ratings for Top Design. I thought it was interesting last night.

  32. steve July 14, 2011 at 7:40 am -

Just saw a promo for this Sunday’s 60 minutes where they’ve basically taken the Diane Sawyer of Jaycee Dugard. I know they can pass it off as their own as they have licensing agreements with ABC News in the US with other current affair shows such as 20/20

My concern is the interview with Diane Sawyer aired in the US for 2 hours. If our local 60 minutes snips and chops it down to fit in a 15 minute segment, i personally think cheapens the huge television event this was/is

  33. ryan July 14, 2011 at 2:17 am -

@Pete: Yeah fully agree, was a dam fantastic episode of masterchef last night! The productions values are just amazing and a very well done job and some amazing food produced aswell! i sooo want that desert.

  34. P July 14, 2011 at 12:38 am -

    @Barrett – agree with you

Over 1m people not included in survey – which is a similar population to Adelaide.

  35. pete July 14, 2011 at 12:13 am -

Does anyone else feel that Wednesdays Masterchef challenge in New York was the best episode this season to date? fantastic production values, and super locations! well done to all involved, and yeah the cooking was great! Meanwhile whilst i flicked over to see the new product placement show with Durie, I was appauled to see him sporting a Qantas tshirt. No shame whatsoever! and the show was rubbish also! what a cold lifeless uninviting cast.

  36. barrett July 13, 2011 at 8:07 pm -

    @P

Why not include Wollongong and the Central Coast as well…both regions are actually closer to Sydney than Newcastle. With all 3 having similar sized populations its a strange quirk of our ratings system that they are ignored along with Canberra but ratings from Adelaide and Perth get precedence.

  37. Trev July 13, 2011 at 4:56 pm -

    @ P
Brisbane does include Gold Coast. Surveyed population is around 2,700,000 I believe.

  38. P July 13, 2011 at 2:56 pm -

I think Nine should be requesting Newcastle should be added to these ratings. If so, it would be helping out Nines rating woes this year.

Is the Gold Coast included as Brisbane? Because it should be included as well. Just because they aren’t capital cities doesn’t mean they don’t have a large population base.

  39. TT July 13, 2011 at 2:18 pm -

I was just wondering, David, how well is ‘My Wife and Kids’ rating on 7mate?

    Thanks :)

  40. steve July 13, 2011 at 2:15 pm -

Is tonight’s episode going to be a hybrid of MC and The Amazing Race? Well it hardly has any competition so it should do very well

I’m really enjoying Pollie week on 7pm, can’t wait for Tony’s turn tonight.

  41. David Knox July 13, 2011 at 1:36 pm -

Last week was a coding error which I noted at the time. The weekly figures on Sunday showed they had corrected it. Happens occasionally in the biz. Remember that overnight figures are always Preliminary.

  42. Gronk July 13, 2011 at 1:27 pm -

    David.
Perth is in with AGT this week but not last week?
I am still confused to the separation last week.

  43. ohyeah July 13, 2011 at 12:07 pm -

looks like neighbours and Wilfred are going to make it interesting for rating on the multi channels on Tuesdays…. Neighbours are pulling good numbers everyday..

  44. callas July 13, 2011 at 10:14 am -

@rutzie.. totally agree !!.. its going to be hard to only put five of those acts through. the quality of all of them was outstanding !!

  45. ryan July 13, 2011 at 1:34 am -

where has tbyg gone? Havn’t seen new eps in months, i don’t even recall seeing new eps at all this yr.

  46. Rutzie July 13, 2011 at 12:55 am -

After a few lacklustre weeks I have to say tonights AGT was probably the best episode of the show I’ve seen. From start to finish all the acts were outstanding. I hope the figures in the morning reflect how good it actually was.

  47. Moanique in Brisbane July 12, 2011 at 7:13 pm -

@ muzza, why would Ch7 fans be worried that Seven came third in primary channels. They come first most nights, first every week of the year so far, and will no doubt come first for the ratings year. Fans don’t need to point out Sevens shortcomings when there are people like you out there who are more than happy to do it :)

  48. Jerome July 12, 2011 at 3:30 pm -

@muzza, thats a strange way to look at it; 7 wins the night and people are expected to point out their shortcomings. how about we point out 9′s shortcomings? ie: the network that didn’t win.

as for only winning because of british shows; 9 and ten are only being held together by The Block and Masterchef, why is winning the night off the back of one show inferior to winning off the back of another? atleast the network and advertisers wouldn’t care.

  49. DansDans July 12, 2011 at 3:23 pm -

So I gather “24″ on ONE was not a ratings winner?? lol

  50. ryan July 12, 2011 at 2:54 pm -

@Kenny: Don’t you mean a much more boring program? lol

  51. Jezza July 12, 2011 at 2:45 pm -

    @ muzza

ch7 are weak on a few nights accross the week, when DA ends I don’t think Sunday will be as strong for them, dunno whether X Factor and Great Migrations will do it. PTTR will come back to keep Tues strong, but they are fair game elsewhere. The trouble is the competition (and ch9 programmers in particular) isn’t that strong. So the weeks will just roll on and ch7 will win the year.

    What do you think?

  52. Guy July 12, 2011 at 2:36 pm -

    @muzza

Its good to see Seven win overall but even as a Seven fan they didn’t deserve to win last night. I know they came third in the primaries. Their digital channels got them over the line i know that and i know Seven are going to start to have a few cracks in their main channel schedule but overall Seven won the night. Digitals are now apart of this environment and are here to stay so sure they came third on Primaries but they still won the night overall.

  53. muzza July 12, 2011 at 1:30 pm -

I like how all the Channel 7 lovers aren’t mentioning the fact that 7 came third in the primary channel and nearly gotten beaten overall when they are quick to point out Channel 9′s shortcomings. The only thing that saved them was old old English shows. How do you spin that Channel 7 lovers???

  54. Kenny July 12, 2011 at 12:07 pm -

@DC – Er, Notice the switch to TEN for “Merlin” at 6:30. Notice that happens every Sunday night?
@ryan- So Don Bourke. Doesn’t have anything clever to say unless it’s scripted for him. As is common these days, when one has a limited vocabulary revert to prolific use of the f-word. My 15 y/old daughters switched to Q&A when he started with his foul mouth. A much more intelligent debate there.

  55. ;) July 12, 2011 at 11:08 am -

hopefuly tar aust gets renewed, but with those numberrs im starting to feel douteful.plese 7 give it one more try.

  56. steve July 12, 2011 at 10:17 am -

Starting to feel a bit sorry for Nine.. even though i know their circumstance is well deserved. The Block is doing well but it’s as if nothing can help ACA.. nothing. Hot Seat ratings are all over the place these days.

But good grief would you look at those numbers for MC? I must say it was a excellent last night, i hope Wednesday’s episode is and does even better.

7pm was hilarious last night, it’s good their numbers are climbing back up. Can of Worms up from last week and it was alot better than last week

  57. Ben Tree July 12, 2011 at 10:03 am -

Good to see Can of Worms slightly improve, a much better episode this week and got similar numbers.

  58. Kenny July 12, 2011 at 9:41 am -

@Catherine- It’s called “contra deals”. Been around since 1956. Did you not notice the Westpac logos on the uniforms, the Westpac Mastercards being used, the plug for Westpac at the end, the publicity bit on the hotel and its rooms, and the Qantas logos on the uniforms. Maybe Qantas got an FOC commercial in Zone C time somewhere too in a “time available” spot. Even the pots and pans are on a “contra” deal.

  59. The Other Adam July 12, 2011 at 9:41 am -

Can of worms was very cringe worthy last night, but Don Burke was very entertaining

  60. callas July 12, 2011 at 9:32 am -

Great Gaga special on ACA . Thoroughly enjoyed it but that muted response from the crowd was terrible. Are they real fans or just employees or friends of the network that were there. If they were genuine “little monsters” then they would have been more animated that that !! (unless the producers told them otherwise)

  61. John July 12, 2011 at 9:23 am -

The Gaga Special is a bit of a disappointment. Beaten by TT. I guess all her fans were in the queue to see her ‘secret’ performance. The Block is a surprise hit for me. I didn’t think it would be so huge. The product placement is pretty tedious and really putting me off… “So we went to Macca’s for breakfast.” Much worse than MC.

  62. tmorgan July 12, 2011 at 8:11 am -

@ Moanigue- Considering 1.5 million people watch D-grade new presenters dancing, yes I do believe at least Sunday nights have been killed by DWTS.
On another note, anyone else watch Rescue last night? It was actually pretty entertaining and had ok production values.

  63. ryan July 12, 2011 at 12:27 am -

Loved can of worms tonight! So dam funny and loved when don kept saying fk, bout time we heard the work fk more on tv! Also good how the audience got a bit more involved.

  64. Moanique in Brisbane July 11, 2011 at 11:41 pm -

@tmorgan, are you serious ? do you really think that DWTS has killed FTA TV. You’re obviously not a fan of DWTS, but to blame it for killing FTA TV, which is far from dead is a bit OTT.

  65. tmorgan July 11, 2011 at 7:38 pm -

Nine has hit rock bottom. Doing worse than in 2007. Hopefully the second half of 2011 will be better.
I miss the days FTA TV was good- DWTS killed it.

  66. Alec July 11, 2011 at 6:46 pm -

The lead in for Ten’s Carbon Tax Special was 1,615,000, how did they not make the top 50?

  67. humus July 11, 2011 at 6:16 pm -

Best Bolt Report yet……….Carbon Tax…..a very big waste of time and money, Please tell me how many degree`s is the world temp going to drop by.?.?.?.

  68. jonno July 11, 2011 at 4:41 pm -

The problem with DWTS last night was that they strung it out way too long and made a really boring show. They could easily chopped an hour of it and kept it nice and tight. They got greedy and the public turned off.

  69. David @ Green Point July 11, 2011 at 4:36 pm -

So, in anticipation of a ratings slaughter against MC & DWTS last night, 9 threw in a double repeat presentation of Mentalist to stretch out the Red John confrontation finale to this Sunday night.
    .
    Clever thinking, 9.

Now the network’ll take an even bigger bloodbath up against the final of Downton Abbey.

Does anyone in 9′s programming dept have a clue ?

  70. steve July 11, 2011 at 2:01 pm -

Don’t be so sure Catherine. Remember they are flying with Qantas so i assume the flights were for free. As for the hotel… perhaps Westpac paid for the accommodation. Sneaky producers ‘trying’ to be subtle about the new Westpac sponsorship haha.

Good on TEN last night, enjoying the New York experience very much so far

  71. catherine July 11, 2011 at 1:25 pm -

I got a shock watching MC. They finally showed all the contestants dishes!! Thankyou thankyou. The dishes looked great except for poor Sun who just served up a cake with icing sugar dusted over it. At least Danni went into places and talked to owners of cafes. Sun just got a recipe off an old lady. Well done to Michael. I do feel sorry for Sun though I know she cant take parts in challenges but I hope they do let her out to see New York. Hayden should be eliminated on having that moustache alone. Thats a disgrace.

I know why ch10 is axing shows and losing money. Its because they fly 2 contestants business class to New York and anoth 6 in economy. Plus they put them up in NY for a week in a flashy hotel. I guess thats the budget.

I was just wondering David what the numbers were for the heavily edited ‘Copycat’ on GEM last night?

Notice the drop from Nine News to the Labor Party add to In There Footsteps. Over 300,000 switched channels. About 150,000 switched off on Ch7.

Seven should have aired a New episode of Castle last night or at least a New episode of Body of Proof. That way it could have been given the lead in and see how it goes. Anyway Seven had a great night as did TEN.

Don’t forget the Grand Prix was on last night which helped TEN get a higher share. I thought DWTS would do higher than that. Guess not. No Winner Announced thing either which is strange. Nine fell flat on its head. I am glad because there is more to life than Sport Channel 9. Last week you threw everything at Seven and still lost. Shows how badly the network is going as a whole.

Oh dear even with the final of DWTS, Seven was almost beaten by Ten who won 7:30-9pm while DWTS was on. DWTS didnt break 1.5mil yet earlier episodes did. The lack of Downton Abbey did hurt Seven. I do not think digital channels pulled Seven over the line. Looking at the ratings, the top 5 digital programs were on Go, One, Eleven and ABC2. Ten’s digital channels would have pulled it up into a close 2nd.

Ten did well with Masterchef, 1st Sunday in awhile in 1st place for the night and over 1.6 million too. Bodes well for the rest of the week and competition. Nine did very well…………. not! The news did well as usual especially in Sydney. In Their Footsteps and 60 Minutes down while The Mentalist sank. I wonder why? Repeats perhaps for both episodes. Of course and it helped Nine gain 3rd place however the gap between 7 and 9 was less than last week though. Nine can fix up Sundays to be no 1 again. They could dominate post Masterchef if they try. At least Nine has a chance to win Monday and Thursday. If they win Wednesday that will be a bonus (they have 1hr of the Block and Top Design).

Thanks to the dreadful lead in from the bastard love child of Noddy and Pinocchio, Ghoulia Gillard, TEN’s Hawaii 50 could be renamed Hawaii Fido, as the final ep ended up in the doghouse…

I expected much higher figures for Dancin’ – or did we all anticipate another win for a 7 “star”…?

How did the ten news special after masterchef go?

  78. DansDans July 11, 2011 at 10:08 am -

With the exception of the top 5 programs, all the numbers are terrible – 632,000 Australia wide gets you in the top 10 on a sunday night??

I think I can see your boat floating off into the sunset, FTA-TV…

    Oh wow!

    Ten almost won the night?

I’m guessing Seven’s digital channels got it over the line.

The DWTS Finale figures are good – but they should have been much much much better.

I watched MC and would have liked to see more of NYC. I guess there will be more to enjoy during the week.

    Well done Ten!

Wow the carbon tax show rated well. How many episodes will there be? Are there any plans for the future?

On a side note to all the Andrew Bolt whingers, if you don’t like him or his views, don’t whinge about him as publicity is oxygen and I may start watching if you keep going on about him!!!
