Al Jazeera bulletins for SBS

SBS ONE will add an Al Jazeera English news bulletin from next week.

SBS ONE will add an Al Jazeera English news bulletin from next week.

Al Jazeera English is the sister channel to the Al Jazeera Arabic language service, based in Doha, Qatar.

A half-hour news program will screen weekdays at 3:30pm with a full hour on Sunday afternoons at 2pm.

SBS Director of News and Current Affairs, Paul Cutler, said, “SBS is the home of news in many languages from around the world, and it’s great to have one of the fastest growing voices in international news and current affairs join our English-language line-up. Al Jazeera is watched by millions of people, in all corners of the world, and we think SBS viewers will appreciate their fresh perspective on global events.”

The Al Jazeera news channel currently airs on Austar but not Foxtel.

  1. This is great news… And it’s great news. 😉

My only issue is that the 3:30pm timeslot can be subject to change sometimes due to early morning sport broadcasts. I think this would’ve been better late-at-night, just before WeatherWatch, as it might also be repeating a lot of stories featured on DW The Journal & PBS NewsHour in the afternoon. Just a thought…

  2. If you mean devoting SBS HD to BBC News and SBS3 to Al Jazeera, that can work, but it may tick off some viewers who want the option to see SBS1 in HD. It’d give SBS the chance to run ad breaks, if that’d help.

  3. @Gary How would you split it with time Zones? They’re location bases London and Doha might be only 2-3 hours difference so main programing would clash no?

  4. @ Kevin
There would be no point broadcasting either of them as an HD channel (the only channel SBS has left to fill), so why not split the HD channel into two SD channels and broadcast both BBC World News and Al Jazeera 24 hours per day.

  5. What happens to the repeats of Letters and Numbers that was on at that time?

I’ve seen this sometimes on at night on W TV Community tv here in Perth.

  6. This will drive the right wingers crazy!

I’ve watched Al Jazeera English while over seas, it’s a really good quality news channel.

    Foxtel really should add it.
However being Murdoch and seeing the way they treat BBC World News, it won’t happen any time soon.
Another good example of why monopolies for media are bad.
