How will America take to rapper S.mouse?

Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys will air on HBO in the US from December.
The series has already screened in the UK where it has been well-received. The Brits have proven to be fans of Lilley’s S.mouse rapper but in the US he has already been given some bad reviews by rappers and hip-hop music producers.
Summer Heights High was also well-received in the US prompting HBO to invest in Angry Boys.
This is going to be one to watch….

Yeah with black face it’s the context.
He is playing a black character it’s ok.
Something like the Red Faces black face sketch is not ok, because the joke is, “look at our silly black faces.”
Going black face isn’t being racist. Anyone with a ounce of sense knows this.
When I saw one of the rappers from New Boyz perform on the first semi-final results show of America’s Got Talent during the week, he spoke exactly like S.Mouse! I thought it was Chris Lilley. LOL
Oh and his sending up of the rap industry is a decade too late, that is not really the way the hip-hop industry is anymore. Also the decision to wear black face added nothing to the comdey, he could have done the whole thing white and the outcome would have been the same, but obviously chris thinks it clever, i’m afraid not.
@shelley
Plenty of american comedies deal with racism using irony without being racist, community does it wonderfully. Angry boys will be labelled racist and deservedly so. A white australian slapping on black make-up and singing and using the n-word, yes im afraid that is just racist, i mean there is not even any humour in it, the rap industry has been parodied so many times before and almost always better and more inspired than what Lilly has put forward, “slap my elbow”? The show has no redeeming qualities, one dimensional characters, simple jokes, relying almost solely on sexual inuendo and swearing to get cheap laughs. There is nothing clever about it, and anyone who says that Lilly’s humour is something you need to think about to find funny, it’s not.
To think if Lilly is to Australia what Ricky Gervais is to Britain, well that is a very sad thought indeed
I looked forward to this series, but (in my opinion at least) it was a disappointment. It was probably too long and overly repetitive.
Stand by for us all to be labelled as racist. Americas don’t get irony.
don’t you guys realise that the yanks or ‘HBO’ worked with Chris this time around, hense the American character. it was a joined ABC/HBO Production, they probably funded him. if it was just his doing Im sure all the characters would have been Australian. Americans loved Summer Heights which aired on HBO also.
I am also in the club of having a whole bunch of the episodes still on my IQ box unwatched.
The biggest problem is, with these sketch characters, there’s no real cohesion to their stories and the show is stretched out way too long.
They’d be better re-editing the entire show down to less episodes.
The whole, “Mum… Nate’s wanking” joke is a bit tired by the 20th time.
Oh HBO, what were you thinking? This will be up there with your decision to pass on Dexter
True Blood, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Angry Boys…now one of these things is not like the other, can you tell me which one doesn’t belong?
@tomothy – same here. I still have them recorded on my PlayTV but think I’ll delete to make space for other things…
Never been a Chris Lilley fan and when I heard about the Rapper, S.Mouse, I liked him even less.
Frankly I don’t see any difference between what Chris Lilley has done and the Black Face skit from Red Faces for which Hey Hey got dragged over the coals. (Rightly so.)
This is a terrible idea and I sincerely hope that Lilley gets the shelacking he so richly deserves.
I don’t see anything talented at all about Chris Lilley
But I invented a new drinking game
Take a shot every time you hear the name Nathan or Nath and you will be blotto after 2 mins 🙂
This show had it’s moments – surf school, the house party and Nathan in bean bag and his arm in pipe, the gay kid spending the day with Daniel, S.mouse had moments. Wasn’t a big fan of him really or the Asian mum. Daniel and Nathan were his best by far I think.
They probably won’t like it because it’s not very funny.
Chris Lilley was completely uninspired when he wrote the rubbish for this series
I’m a huge fan of the show but worry about the reaction in the US
This series was awesome! I can’t wait to see how Nathan gets on at deaf school. I think he is looking forward to it. Also how will Gran go living in Dunt? wah about those Mucka Boys? Many many questions to be answered!
Loved his former shows, lost interest in this pretty quickly and have seen past ep 5.
Angry Boys, Biggest dissapointment of the year
This is a very bad idea.
what an embarresment to Australia this show is
uhohhh… don’t know if they’ll get the dry humour…
HBO? They are normally more discerning than this aren’t they? It might get a few novelty viewers at first, but they won’t last. Just as they didn’t last in Australia.
