Audience Inventory 2011

Which network is the most reliable for starting on time? Which is the most trustworthy? It's time once again to have your say in TV Tonight's annual audience survey.

It’s time once again for the TV Tonight Audience Inventory -your chance to have your say on Programming, Networks and Issues in Free to Air and Pay TV.

This is the third time the annual survey has been conducted.

Which network is the most trustworthy? Which is the most reliable for starting on time?

Which Guide do you prefer? Newspaper, online, on-screen EPG?

What’s more offensive: Sexual content, language or violence?

How important is fast-tracking, keeping credits at the end of movies, playing sport live, merging public broadcasters, having more packaging options in Pay TV, upgrading IQ features?

New questions this year ask:
– How often do you watch TV on catch-up sites?
– Have you ever participated in a TV ratings survey?

There are 29 questions in total and the survey takes around 10 minutes to complete.

The survey will close on Friday September 9th.

  1. Less opportunities for more personalised answers to the questions this year, David. And having the comment boxes at the end only be a single line tall is slightly annoying.

Anyway, I’d like to complain that SBS’s start and finish times don’t match the EPG sometimes. The EPG doesn’t vary like other channels, it’s always round numbers, 7:30-8:30, 10:00-11:05, etc., but quite often things start or finish one or two minutes late (or even early!). Go Back to Where You Came From was the worst, the final episode overran by 10+ minutes. I’ve noticed ABC2’s EPG times slip away from actual airtimes by the end of the night too, but that’s far rarer. The public broadcasters shouldn’t be doing this, even by accident.

  2. Am I the only one who has seen that Channels particularly Seven put in a few ads in the first hour then ramp them up in the last half hour. I watched William and Mary and I am fairly sure that there were 12 ad breaks in the two hours and four of them were in the last half hour. Maybe they know that they have got people hooked and they just milk the audience for a few extra ads. What ever happened to de regulation of the commercial TV industry, it was supposed to self regulate- surprise it does not work for us viewers only the TV stations. Commercial radio is the same they and the TV stations can put as many ads on as they like. On the other hand community radio and TV are limited to 5 minutes per hour. Maybe we should get our politicians to look at regulating TV sations again…..or not….probably too hard.

  3. I would make a few changes to the options for question What’s more offensive:
    Ad breaks
    Pop up advertisements
    The words “special time”

Probably more offensive then violence, language and sexual references. 😀

  4. I find it Very fun, sitting in front of my TV at 8:55pm, waiting for my 8:30 TV show to start, and discovering that…. the reality show before said schedules 8:30pm show has not even began it’s “final” challenge.

It’s even more enjoyable sitting at 9:10pm, waiting for the seemingly endless amount of judges trying to make the show more tense by adding another ad break in between every judges rant and rating of the completion of the challenge.

It makes me as a viewer feel special and warm inside when said 8:30pm show begins at 9:25pm, having that show cut down from 42 minutes to 34 minutes, to make up the time of aforementioned reality show’s overrunning.

And then networks ask why people are switching over to that **flickers eyes whispers** torrents **makes sure to cough after supposedly secretive word**

It’s simple 7, 9 and 10. When a show is meant to start at 8:30, make sure it starts no later than 8:32. Don’t have ads for MasterChef or The Builders or whatever of the 10,000,000,000,000 spinoffs/copies/repeats of both have been conceived in the past 24 months right in the middle of my show. Lastly, promote something apart from MasterChef/The Builders/X-Factor, then maybe you might have a viewing audience when those said shows aren’t on…

  5. Done

    Thanks again Mr Knox. 🙂

One teeny thing, I was a little unsure on the Q asking how often you watch a channel and I will give you an example……only thing I watch on ch 7 is ‘Keeping up with Kardashians’, when it is on it is on 4 times a month which is ‘a few times per month’ but that makes it seem like I am enjoying watching a variety of shows on 7 – I’m not trust me, most of the time 7 is deplorable!

    Rant finished, moving on.

  6. @ Cameron. I also completed the servey. I also hope the Networks take notice at this. But i am thinking they will not. Afterall they never listen to the viewers because they could not give a rats ass at all about the people who they are trying to atract yet they cry faul when we get lured away by the internet and other means. If the tv industry is to improve then they have to listen to surveys like this one. Not holding my breath though.

  7. we’ve had foxtel in our household for nearly 3 years. the free to air viewing has dicreased quite alot, the main programs watched are Neighbour, Home and Away, Rush, Good News Week, Packed to the Rafters, Winners and Losers, the Block and Talkin Bout Your Generation. i personally watch more programming on Ten and Eleven than any other network and havent really invested any time in channel surfing to see what the other channels offer. in the last month or so i have also started watching more programs online. but in our household foxtel wins hands down.

  8. Just completed it. Just hope the networks see the results and use it to fix their problems. A couple of questions that I believe should have been asked if whether we think the summer ratings period is important and should be a part of the actual ratings survey and if we think Friday and Saturday are as important than Sun-Thu. I say yes. I also believe digital channels are important and should not be treated as dumping grounds and places to repeat stuff over and over. They are a great place to show new content to a particular audience and should have more new content. Eleven wins there, especially with Neighbours.
