Desperate Housewives ending confirmed

The rumours prove true. Just one more season for the ladies of Wisteria Lane.

It’s official: Desperate Housewives will end its run at the end of its eighth season.

Following rumours on the weekend ABC chief Paul Lee made the announcement during the Television Critics Assn. media tour.

“It is an iconic show,” Lee said. “We are so proud of it. I just wanted to make sure that this show that put this network on the map … had its victory lap, had a chance to really set out every episode and build an arc [in its final season].”

Creator Marc Cherry said, “I’m also very aware of people overstaying their welcome, shows that go on too long and people just forget about them. They drift away into nothing, and they’re unceremoniously booted off.

“I wanted to go out while the network still saw us as a viable show, while we were still doing well in the ratings, and we were still a force to be contended with. I wanted to go out in the classiest way possible.”

But there is some good news with ABC set to take a second look at Cherry’s Hallelujah, a story about a Tennessee town torn between good and evil and starring Terry O’Quinn (Lost).

Cherry said he had no timeline for the show and had asked ABC for more time to work on the pilot because “half of it was terrific and half of it wasn’t.”

“This is so complex, what I’m trying to do here,” he said. “Give me the time to do it right. … You kind of have to get it perfect. It’s a big swing.”

  1. The “Friends” VHS tapes that I bought back in the late 90s had “Season” written on them, so the term has been used in Australia for at least a decade. A “season finale” has, for a very, very long time, indicated the end of the current year’s show, while a “series finale” has long meant the end of the entire show.

  2. @Jake. Conflicting information on Google and Wikipedia but all I know is we never used the term “season” up until a few years ago. It’s a small thing but we tend to use a lot of americanisms now.

  3. @JohnW. When I was a lad a cycle was something you rode, not some posh way of describing a group of episodes of a bunch of self absorbed people walking down a catwalk. What is this world coming to? Thanks for that info John

  4. To my understand, ‘season’ is used to refer to a particular well season of a show (season 1, 2 etc) and ‘series’ it the entire television show and its entire run…

That’s how I use the words anyway.

  5. Its done well to go 8 seasons. I still enjoy the show and will miss the characters. Gabby and Susan still made me laugh and Lynette was one of the better female characters on tv. Bree still had things to offer and the men will be missed to.

I still reckon MJ is on of the cutest kids on tv.

It will be interesting to see how it bows out.

  6. Sad to hear that it is going … there will be nothing like it to watch now Brothers and Sisters has gone too … they were both very special shows, how dull it will be!

If they want a successful and intersting new show, get Russell T Davies to write it!
