Renovator contestant criticises editing, possible spoiler.

Spoiler: A contestant on The Renovators has criticised his depiction at the hands of editors and hit back at an online fan discussion.

Spoiler: A contestant on The Renovators has criticised his depiction at the hands of editors and hit back at an online fan discussion.

Kelly, 41, from TEN’s new series responded to a Facebook page which was discussing contestants on the show, and in particular his reaction to renovating during dusty conditions.

He wrote: “As an asthmatic I choose not to broom concrete & asbestos dust into my lungs when I renovate. I use a vacuum. In this environment there is no control over dust & an expectation that you will work in it & then remove your mask to talk on camera.

“There are 15 people in the house, 10 cameramen & producers & only 1 door in & out. Last year I nearly died from whooping cough which would have left my 2 children without a father. When I saw my brother & sister renovators sucking in concrete dust, I freaked out.”

Kelly also hit out at the editing by producers and was unhappy about online comment from viewers.

“I hope one day you all get to renovate a whole house in 1 day followed by cameras after a month of sleep deprivation. To top it off, after 2 weeks of slaving yourself, you get 1 minute of airtime depicted as a wanker & then abused by people who can’t possibly understand the pressure involved working with 25 people you have never met.

“I have never renovated a house in a day & would never try it again.”

His comments may also have hinted that his appearance in the show is short-lived.

But the comment was then deleted.

Alluding to a storyline online follows similar Spoilers in MasterChef when Billy Law tweeted about his elimination ahead of it airing.

A TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight, “It’s not normal practise for a contestant to engage in social media while they are on the show. It appears that Kelly did respond to a comment but took the post down himself.

“Neither (producers) Shine nor TEN took down the post.”

Four contestants are up for elimination in the Reality show tonight, but Kelly isn’t one of them.

  1. Interesting article. I remember this episode and I did think he was a being a bit dramatic! But reading what he said now, I guess I can see where he is coming from. I have noticed a few bit of editing or cut to so far. When there’s a surprise or OMG! moment they seem to cut to Christie from WA fair bit who is either smiling or has her hand over her mouth in shock/surprise. They also cut ot some other contestants with the same look.

I don’t mind the The Renovators, but I think I’ll be more interested when they actually make a solid start on the houses.

  2. Good on ya Kelly , well said with that statement , the amount of editing done in any reality show must be so annoying when you see the outcome of what youve been doing.Id like to see them shoot a full 10 minute continuous shot of them building then we would see what its like , this cut and paste and fast paced edited style of television has become annoying.

    1. Col I don’t agree. I rather think if you want to watch 10 mins of someone renovating you should look over the fence. TV needs to have some drama. The issue here is whether he is saying he was misrepresented as well as coming to grips with the fact there are so many people on the show that everybody can only expect minimal camera time.

  3. He has been the worst renovator since the beginning. First is was that stupid ‘moon’ painting on the window that he was going pyhcho over. The judges said it looked like a child painted it. Then he does the whole dust incident. Get rid of him already!

  4. Is this guy for real??? Asbestos dust?????? Is he alleging there was asbestos dust in that house, because if he is that is an extremely serious allegation and it would mean the producers are breaking OH & S laws in a very serious way. Nobody needs to be reminded that even the tiniest speck of asbestos dust is potentially deadly and asbestos removal needs to be handled solely by professionals. I agree with him that the editing of that particular scene was done in such a way as to make him look like a pathetic prima donna, but he needs be careful with what he is alleging here. By the way, I am shocked that he is only 41. I would have placed him in his early 50’s if I didn’t know better.

  5. Ten already let out a spoiler who gets eliminated, in the programme listing you posted the other day in your article headed “MasterChef finale, Renovators update” – we’re at the stage now where we know who it’s gonna be.

  6. Even before clicking it was obvious it was him – and I’ve only seen the first two episodes where he had the bright idea of covering up the windows in a design office with something more suited to a nursery – though even babies have more taste.

No surprise he’s eliminated quickly and whinging about it.
