The Block shock as Polly & Waz sell the only house at auction

There were cheers, tears, and a proposal but Polly & Waz win The Block in a shock result at auction. UPDATE: Katrina & Amie's house sells post-auction for $860,000.

Polly & Waz have won The Block 2011.

Their property sold for $855,000 which was $15,000 above their reserve price of $840,000

They win $100,000 for making the most above their profit.

But the evening, filmed last night at Fitzroy Town Hall, was a night of high drama with a staggering 3 of 4 properties passed in at auction.

It was full of drama with cheers, tears, a proposal and a man in a hot pink suit.

Directly before their auction Josh proposed to Jenna in a moment of surprise emotion. With her family watching on via the auction monitor, Jenna said ‘Yes.’

Results:

Josh and Jenna: Passed in at $901,000
37 Cameron Street
Reserve: $950,000

Polly & Waz: Sold for $855,000
39 Cameron Street
Reserve: $840,000

Katrina & Amie: Passed in at $822,000
41 Cameron Street
Reserve: $860,000

Rod and Tania: Passed in at $832,000
43 Cameron Street
Reserve: $850,000

Rod and Tania also won a car following an online vote from viewers.

The couples had all elected where the order of the auction, with Rod and Tania nominating the final place. Josh and Jenna opted for first.

The outcome will be much as a disappointment to viewers as it was to the couples. After such high ratings it ended as an anti-climax, and contrasts to previous seasons where couples have walked away with sums up to six figures.

Amie summed it up best by saying, “A waste of time, really, isn’t it….?”

Being passed in at auction was not new to The Block. Last year a Vaucluse apartment was also passed in, but sold privately several days later.

Nine’s high profile night of television also included promos for The Farmer Wants a Wife, The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men and The Joy of Sets.

UPDATED: Soon after the final auction Katrina and Amie’s estate agent Glen Coutinho, from Hocking Stuart, announced that they had negotiated the sale of their home for $860,000.

  1. As channel nine paid approx $900,000 for each dilapidated cottage it was no surprise that the reserves were way ahead of market value. There is the stench of something rotten here when you consider the real estate agents that argued the properties would sell for between 800,000 to $880,000 were being investigated by the Victorian watch dog for undervaluing the properties. Turns out they were smack on the dollar. The reality is that the properties needed to sell for approx. $1.3 to $1.4 to even break even. A ridiculous exercise in bad management by channel nine. They ignored all market advice and set reserves believing that buyers would pay inflated prices for the celebrity factor. Insulting to buyers and to contestants. I feel terribly sad for the three contestants that put their heart and soul into their renovations to have an outcome like this. It was a great series with great contestants and great hosts that ended in an appallingly anti-climatic stuff up. This was not live TV, did they not think to reshoot? I wonder how nine msn will be reporting on the investigation into the real estate agents who called last night’s outcome perfectly….and I wonder who reported them in the first place?

  2. Thank goodness i have not wasted my life watching this, just skimmed thru it online. It had so much padding, rehashing, and pointless challenge days, there was minimal new footage anyway. I am over this type of show. Give me a computer anytime.

  3. Want to watch a real reality auction finale?
    The renovators will deliver people
You know why? Because it’s not about the reserve price like the block, it’s the most percentage profit of one house and they win the total profits of all the houses.
The block can’t compare to that…as which was clearly proven tonight.
My god what a fail Lollll

  4. I agree…the reserves where All too high! The market is tuff and people are looking for a bargain! Not a good way to finish a successful series Channel 9! I’m still shocked But also happy for Waz and Polly they’re great fun to watch.

  5. Definitely Flopomania!!
On a perfect sunny day in Melbourne they should have been sold as outdoor auctions as in the previous series. And who was that idiot in pink? That was a hi jack if ever there was one.

  6. What a lot of hype for such a dismal result. What happened? Where were the buyers? The amount that was spent on the interiors and furnishings made these properties worth more than their reserves. I felt the same as Amy, what a waste of time. I hope when they do sell they get something like Chez and Brenton who ended up with $90k.

  7. What a disgrace and totally unfair to the other couples. How can Polly and Waz get the lowest reserve – when they had the only view of the city!! Would seem to have been a bit stacked in their favour!!

  8. Whole night on nine is a bit of a dud…auctions underperform and now Underbelly seems to be going the same way…a night of high hopes fails to deliver!

  9. Another silly show helping fan the flames of our overpriced property market. Im very glad the properties were passed in. Hopefully it will be a warning sign to anyone considering “flipping” properties for profit. Good riddance.

  10. I feel sorry for the three couples that didn’t sell there houses.
Katrina & Amie took it really badly. While Rod and Tania seem to take it well and Josh and Jenna seemed too happy over the engagement.

I’ve seen The Blocks facebook page criticizing nine for the properties being passed in, but whats nine meant to do? Pay people to bid.
Its just a sad state of the current property market and current financial times.

  11. I want my 2 hours back please.Got sick to death of the delays and the constant cross promos for underbelly and the farmer wants a wife.waste of time. But rest assured its back next year folks.

  12. From brief look, between ads on 7, I noted “big audience”
Shame they told us before only 20 or so serious bidders were in the Town Hall.
Nine must have paid for some “extras” or friends to fill out place.

Seemed like there was lack of serious bidding during my brief look see.
Can anyone give details/stats etc ?

  13. @Matt

I don’t think so. I think the article meant to say Overvalued because imo they all were over-valued.

That was one of the worst finales for a reality show i have enjoyed in a very long time. One big Fail! This is why this show was canned in the first place because of this very thing happening. Its just very embarrassing tv. I am happy for Polly and Waz but Katrina and Amie are right. 2 and a bit months of their lives to come in with nothing, work hard and leave with nothing. Its a bit like slave labour if you think about it.

  14. Very glad that the best couple (but not necessarily the best “renovators”) won The Block, even if it was just because they had the lowest reserve!

Sucks to be the other teams though.

  15. You could definitely tell that everyone was shocked, it just seemed to finish abruptly without any sense of joy that a massive finale like this deserves.
