Big Brother: Secrets to air on Nine in 2012

By David Knox on September 9, 2011 / Filed Under News 143

Big Brother is finally set to return to Australian television in 2012 -on Channel Nine.

The Herald Sun reports the show will return as Big Brother: Secrets, where every housemate has a secret.

In April TV Tonight suggested the show could be revived on a digital channel by tweaking the show around the French version: Secret Story. In that series housemates are compelled to interact with one another to try and discover each other’s secret and win cash prizes. The format encourages housemates not to fly under the radar.

TEN is believed to have to bid on the new series, but Nine is said to have signed the deal today.

“I understand we are doing it,” a Nine source told the newspaper.

But Nine is also determined to let viewers know it won’t be the same old Big Brother, and will likely be produced on a slimmer budget.

There is no word yet on the host.

The show last aired in Australia in 2008 but fans have always longed for its return.

Update: I have now confirmed the story, with sources, but it’s “early days” on all the details…

    No!
This is just the worst news.
I thought viewers may have moved on from such rubbish.

@Miller T1, Yes. young people do watch tv but Facebook is the biggest reality (show, event, thing,Whatever,)the world has seen. Social media for teenagers is much bigger than tv is for adults. Teenagers today consider their phone as an extension of their body. Big Brother is so yesterday, just like channel nine.If they think kids are going to commit to Big Brother like adults commit to The Block they are behind the times. For Big Brother to suceed it has to be exceptional which will be hard to do if they do it on the cheap.

so happy to hear its coming back, just dont have scott cam involved and it will be all good!! cant wait for it to start

  4. bindi September 10, 2011 at 12:21 am -

meh, just another thing on 9 I won’t be watching, glad it will leave the 10 schedule unaffected unlike in the past when it ruined everything.

  5. Ryaneco September 10, 2011 at 12:10 am -

IMO Big Brother is a format that feels wrong on any other channel aside from 10. It is their iconic brand. I don’t see a future with Nine. Plus they need to dump the gimmick secret shit. IMO BB worked best when it was in it most basic form; season 1 and 2

  6. alfagirl September 10, 2011 at 12:07 am -

It appears that a lot of people are excited to have BB back. It’s not for me but I hope you all enjoy it and that Channel 9 doesn’t disappoint you.

  7. David Knox September 9, 2011 at 11:46 pm -

Looks like a lot of interest in this. Not surprised.

    Andrew_81: wrong.

  8. Mac September 9, 2011 at 11:26 pm -

There are officially no new ideas left to be found in television.

  9. Anon September 9, 2011 at 11:06 pm -

Natalie Garonzi tweeted today that she is no longer unemployed ( after the last episode of Uplate!) So maybe her. She fits in with the Go! Profile and is the perfect woman for the job. She proved she can host live tv with Xtra Factor and The Mint.

    Tipping the Garonz!

  10. J Bar September 9, 2011 at 11:04 pm -

    Nine is the new Ten.

  11. JB September 9, 2011 at 10:42 pm -

Perfect fit… crappy trashy show, for a crappy trashy channel. But you know what. This will probably rate enormously well. Why, i don’t know, but i think it will.

  12. Secret Squïrrel September 9, 2011 at 10:29 pm -

This could be really good for Go, with specials on the main channel. Agree with every one of the “please, not this person as host” comments. Nightmare would be Eddie and Shelley together, with the “chk-chk boom” girl doing the Up Late show.

Here’s an idea – next year’s Top Design contestants design and help construct the BB house superstructure then The Block contestants fit it out.

  13. DAN September 9, 2011 at 10:28 pm -

oh god please let this be true i would love BB back i would be in the best of both worlds being able to watch the aus version on tele and the UK version on my lap top this verson sounds intresting i swore that i would never watch any new shows on nine but this will be an exemption i just hope it happens

  14. MillerT1 September 9, 2011 at 10:17 pm -

Jonno, what about all the young people watching shows on TV at the moment?

  15. tomothy September 9, 2011 at 9:47 pm -

Please don’t use an existing Ch. Nine host, bring in someone new (unless it is Shura Taft). BB seriess one was the best when it was all new and the contestants were wondering if people actually watched. I dont think it will ever be that good again. But being on Nine, perhaps there won’t be anyone watching *cough* Top Design *cough*

  16. Eye September 9, 2011 at 9:46 pm -

So TV land is totally out of ideas

  17. robert caldwell September 9, 2011 at 9:45 pm -

they better not let eddie, jules, shelly, scott, karl, hamish or andy host. it will kill it

  18. george t September 9, 2011 at 9:39 pm -

    Sad.

Probably to be hosted by Richard Wilins or Richard Reid.

Michelle Mahone would be a better choice anyday?

  19. Camo September 9, 2011 at 9:31 pm -

whats the name of the bloke that used to host uplate…Mike Goldman… he has been hanging around nine a bit lately…and i even think he has been on Kerru Anne a bit hasnt he…. penny dropping anywhere anyone??

  20. Courtney September 9, 2011 at 9:29 pm -

Funnily enough; the sole reason I found out about this site was due to the axing of Big Brother!

  21. ROK September 9, 2011 at 9:27 pm -

Anyone know when they are auditioning? =P

  22. Nick September 9, 2011 at 9:15 pm -

“The world has changed…. young people have moved onto Facebook”

Yes and teenage boys no longer rely on SBS and Adults Only specials. A treasure trove of nudie bits is now just a click away.

  23. Michael Kezza September 9, 2011 at 9:12 pm -

Hey what about Steve Jacobs for host. He was great on Power of ten and I think would be even better for this.

  24. Ajay September 9, 2011 at 9:05 pm -

It should aim for a broad audience and be more a psychological experiment into the interactions between different types of characters and people rather than just having young brainless bogans as has been the case in previous series’.

Go to any bus stop of a morning where you see normal people from all walks of life waiting to go to work, their faces full of character shaped by life’s joys and struggles, they should be the types picked for this new series.

The bitter old man who never smiles, the middle aged spinster who’s never married, the resident happy go lucky bimbo, the young lost soul, the resident family man full of family stresses, the arrogant hard to get along with young punk, the elderly wise old widow, the middle aged housewife not happy with her lot, the flirty nymphomaniac etc etc…

Just normal everyday people that you would find on any street, in any shop, on any corner, on any bus stop. That’s what I would like to see, the interactions between different people of different character types, rather than young hooligans flashing around and making fools of themselves.

Just checking it not 1st april , lol. Will they bring back the original voice of big brother

why do i have a feeling that channel nine are going to screw this up??
thankgod its backk…but im p*ssed its not on channel TEN

  29. Daniel September 9, 2011 at 8:23 pm -

    Yeah!!!

  30. Brent September 9, 2011 at 8:13 pm -

    Yaaaaayyyy!!! Big Brother returns!

I must say Channel Nine is taking a big risk next year with The Voice & Big Brother.

Channel Ten needs to pick up their act. I think they’ve lost the plot over there.

Channel Seven is the only one who’s doing it right!

  31. Andrew_81 September 9, 2011 at 8:01 pm -

Wait a minute, havent they just let the cat out of the bag for potential housemates?

Anyone auditioning is going to go in knowing everyone has a secret. was that suppose to be a secret and you ruined it David? lol

  32. APM September 9, 2011 at 8:00 pm -

if its anything like Ten’s version, they’ll have a daily show at 7pm. and if thats so, you know what that’ll mean….. no Big Bang or 2.5 Men repeats at that time.. for 3-4 months at least. Nine really do need something like this show to get back on track, pretty sure it worked well for Ten back in the day before it started to suck. I had heard a while ago another channel bought the rights but I heard it was Seven. but if Ten kept the show Im sure it would have gone to Eleven anyway, more of a youth show, which means GO will probably repeat it.

  33. MuchoTB September 9, 2011 at 7:52 pm -

This will be interesting…it is hard to tell whether this will be a success or not.

  34. Matt September 9, 2011 at 7:44 pm -

    Bring back Gretel and Mike!

  35. Moanique in Brisbane September 9, 2011 at 7:38 pm -

I would never watch this crap no matter what channel it is on. I hope if fails miserably

  37. Maev....Sydney September 9, 2011 at 7:28 pm -

I was glad to see BB is back….many of my friends in the US watch their version….
But worried about it being on Nine…and “it won’t be the same old Big Brother”
Hope they do it right!….*fingers X*

  38. James H September 9, 2011 at 7:19 pm -

This is the best news ever.

  39. Joely September 9, 2011 at 7:11 pm -

I hate this news. I’ve waited so long for BB to come back…,but ch9? Wrong wrong wrong. They will absolutely ruin it!!!

  40. Paul September 9, 2011 at 7:04 pm -

Jules Lund, Shura Taft, Richard Wilkins, Eddie McGuire or Karl Stefanovic as hosts ?? Oh no!!

  41. Craig September 9, 2011 at 7:00 pm -

Didn’t Nine/ACA run stories against Big Brother in the past, bringing up all the negatives of the reality show, guess the shoes on the other foot now. Either way I won’t be watching.

  42. jess September 9, 2011 at 6:57 pm -

I am happy with both UK and US BB but i welcome the people-watching aspect of any BB, as long as it isn’t constant stupid games. Making people use their intelligence to work out a secret sounds fun, more like The Joe Shmoe Show than BB, but it’s all good! ( As long as it is on my computer, not my tv, which has ads!)

  43. Peter A September 9, 2011 at 6:55 pm -

Yes Yes Yes…… but if its Eddie McGuire hosting it, forget it.

  44. Bella September 9, 2011 at 6:54 pm -

Oh good grief. Though I think it should be on GO! only.

  45. Phoenix727 September 9, 2011 at 6:52 pm -

Well with the announcement that Aaron Sorkin’s new show is going to series we really are going from the sublime to the ridiculous with this news.

Good god in heaven… if this doesn’t confirm the world ends in 2012 I don’t know what does.

  46. Gonzo September 9, 2011 at 6:51 pm -

wow, Endemol is now the busiest production house in the country by a long way now!

  47. Mia September 9, 2011 at 6:44 pm -

I think the best way I can describe how excited I am by this news is be sharing that I could use a Poise pantyliner right about now!!!

Although I am a bit dubious about it being on 9.

    But still… Yay!!

  48. Tasmanian de√il September 9, 2011 at 6:43 pm -

    Oh dear…

They should have purchased Coach Trip instead – the less distasteful, more entertaining version of Big Brother.

  49. jonno September 9, 2011 at 6:38 pm -

Big brothers audience is young.Since Big Brother last aired in Australia young people have moved onto Facebook. Big Brother is a show you have to commit to just like Masterchef, Renovators and the block. These shows attract a broader audience. Facebook takes up a lot of young peoples time now, it is their biggest commitment now and they can all get it for free on their smartphones. The world has changed dramatically since Big Brother last aired here.

  50. Sedi September 9, 2011 at 6:38 pm -

Ive been watching BBUK religiously and am so happy to see BB back on air in Australia!

I am actually happy to see it go to Nine, TEN have had their time with it and Seven will probably drop it if it doesn’t rate well.

But giving Nine’s chances with reality television, they need to step this up! I suggest poaching Sonia Kruger or Chrissie Swan to host, please get someone with experience and intelligence! Maybe even Allison Langton? (She probably wouldn’t stoop that low!)

Cut budget to me is actually great news – Id prefer it to be about the people rather than the prize money!

  51. ryan September 9, 2011 at 6:34 pm -

    Yawn

  52. Aaron September 9, 2011 at 6:28 pm -

Great news-ish, although must not get too excited — I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than bitterly dissapointed. Please no existing Channel 9 personalities to host though !!

@Goonies – there is ‘old skool Big Brother 1.0′, then there is that shit Channel 10 produced in the last 2-3 years they had it … I hope too they go back to basics, although that secrets twist is a good idea — none of that “games” rubbish aimed at the wrong audience, or “Big Brothers Modelling Academy”, full of 18-25 year old bimbo brainless drongos.

  53. Jocelyn September 9, 2011 at 6:27 pm -

Heaps awesome. As long as its not Ricki lee Coulter!!!!

  54. Todd September 9, 2011 at 6:27 pm -

Best TV-related news I’ve heard since X Factor was renewed back in March! :D

  55. JohnTV September 9, 2011 at 6:25 pm -

Im hearing Shura Taft as potential host which would work with the GO! audience.

  56. Zat September 9, 2011 at 6:23 pm -

Any chance one of the housemate’s secret could be that they have an incredibly nasty, incredibly contagious disease? That would be great TV.

  57. Alf September 9, 2011 at 6:22 pm -

“Oh dear. Secrets.. one is gay, one is a hermaphrodite, one is really a man, one is really a woman, one is really real… what sort of secrets?”

But I bet that they will All be white, it is Channel Nine after all.

  58. Guy September 9, 2011 at 6:21 pm -

Woohoo! Wish it were TEN but they had their chance. All we need now is a revamp of So You Think You Can Dance. Guess this will fill Nines 7pm void. Thats what they will be hoping anyway.

  59. John September 9, 2011 at 6:21 pm -

Not for me! At least there are many channels to choose from

  60. Josh September 9, 2011 at 6:21 pm -

    Terrific =D!!!!!! Cannot wait!!

  61. Andrew September 9, 2011 at 6:15 pm -

    Finally.

Really hope they can make this work. And I hope they don’t use Shelley Craft, Jules Lund, Kyle & Jackie O or Hamish & Andy as hosts. They need someone fresh and new!

  62. Kim September 9, 2011 at 6:13 pm -

Great I can see it now they will have a Friday night games and put the football on 2 hrs delayed because ‘we want to give viewers the opportunity to see their favourite shows on the main channel’

  63. Matt September 9, 2011 at 6:12 pm -

    Love this news!

  64. Ingle September 9, 2011 at 6:11 pm -

    Noooooooooooo!!!
    Why Nine? Why?

  65. Dizzy Stuff September 9, 2011 at 6:06 pm -

As long as they bring back Gaelan I’ll be happy. And don’t forget Travis from Bolvia.

  66. Bogues September 9, 2011 at 6:03 pm -

Thank you nine for at least making one decent programming decision this year. Please don’t ruin it by signing Kyle, Jackie O, Hamish or Andy.

  67. Travis September 9, 2011 at 6:00 pm -

    Its Challenge night!

  68. David Knox September 9, 2011 at 5:56 pm -

Obviously being primed for GO! as I suggested in the first place. Maybe with an Eviction show on Nine?

‘Hello and welcome to Big Brother, I’m Karl Stefanovic’

  71. Anthony Mai September 9, 2011 at 5:51 pm -

  72. ? Man September 9, 2011 at 5:51 pm -

I don’t mind , as long as they bring back the Friday japannees game show night.

  74. Adam Oriti Art September 9, 2011 at 5:49 pm -

  75. Andrew_1981 September 9, 2011 at 5:45 pm -

Wow this sounds cool! I hope nine can pull it off though.

  76. Big V September 9, 2011 at 5:43 pm -

  77. Rub_a_dub_dub September 9, 2011 at 5:43 pm -

Yes Yes Yes! Finally, dont have to watch crappy US or UK bb! Bring it On!

  78. Goonies September 9, 2011 at 5:43 pm -

“it won’t be the same old Big Brother”

In that case I am not interested. I want old skool Big Brother 1.0

Not ch 9 whites only find a secret attention seeking stupidity!

  79. Ann September 9, 2011 at 5:42 pm -

    Oh no

  80. deedeedragons September 9, 2011 at 5:40 pm -
