NRL / Rugby World Cup schedule

Here are the times for Nine's NRL and Rugby World Cup coverage this weekend.

Here are the times for Nine’s NRL and Rugby World Cup coverage this weekend, which includes live coverage of some events in Sydney and Brisbane.

But there is no utilisation of multichannels, while the Rugby World Cup is delayed on several broadcasts.

It’s the biggest weekend of football ever when Wide World of Sports showcases 18 hours of rugby league and rugby union – three days of crunching combat this Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Channel Nine.

The NRL Telstra Premiership Qualifying Final between Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium in Sydney starts Nine’s massive weekend of coverage tomorrow night, live from 7.30pm.

The opening Rugby World Cup 2011 clash between hosts New Zealand and Tonga will follow the Tigers-Dragons clash on Friday night.

On Saturday it’s back-to-back NRL Telstra Premiership Qualifying Finals, first with the Brisbane Broncos and New Zealand Warriors live from Suncorp Stadium at 6.30pm, before the Manly Sea Eagles and North Queensland Cowboys do battle live at 8.30pm at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Nine then heads across the Tasman as Argentina meet England in their first World Cup fixture at Dunedin’s Otago Stadium from 10.30pm.

On Sunday Wide World of Sports, presented by Ken Sutcliffe and Giaan Rooney, starts a colossal day of sport on Nine at 10.00am and leads in to The Sunday Footy Show with Andrew Voss,  Andrew Johns, Brad Fittler and guest host Andrew Ryan at 11.00am.

Next up at 12.00pm is The Sunday Roast with Andrew Voss, Mark Geyer, Terry Kennedy and Andrew Johns tackling the big issues on and off the field with their irreverent brand of humour and style.

The Wallabies step out for their first confrontation of the Rugby World Cup against Italy on Sunday afternoon and Nine will be there live from 1.00pm AEST.

After the rugby test it’s back to the NRL with the Melbourne Storm, minor premiers, playing the eighth-placed Newcastle Knights, live on Nine from 3.30pm.

The voice of rugby league, Ray Warren, will lead Nine’s NRL commentary team. Joining him are Andrew Voss, Peter Sterling and Phil Gould, while Paul Vautin, Andrew Johns, Brad Fittler and Wally Lewis head up the expert panel.

Wide World of Sports’ expert rugby panel is led by Ken Sutcliffe. Joining him are former Wallabies captains George Gregan, Andrew Slack and John Eales, injured Wallabies prop Benn Robinson, and Nine sports reporter Tim Sheridan.

  1. Wow the union commonwealth (oh sorry ‘world’) cup begins. time to watch no-name players from Anglo nations beat up 3-world countries by 100+ points. And when the tournament becomes remotely watch-able, theirs more chance that Halley’s Comet will reappear in the sky than a seeing a game with a try. I just love game decided from beginning to end by penalty goals. just keep me away

  2. The RWC is one of the biggest team sporting events on the planet. Why have a bunch of amateur brainless morons been allowed the tv rights. There is no coverage as it will all be over before it has started.

If this is a prelude to the Olympics…. well you just know it is going to be one hell of a crap fest.

  3. @JB – Or they could even on-sell the games in the non-rugby states to another broadcaster – for example why cant we get this Live on ABC2 (or 3 since for the most time it’s not used in the evening) or SBS TWO?

Remember The Ashes test a few years ago, 9 had a clash with Wimbledon so it was broadcast (admittedly Australia wide) on ABC

  4. Imagine if Sam makes the final of the US Open too, there’s no way with that schedule Nine would show it, there are going to be a lot of unhappy tennis fans. Thanks for Foxtel

  5. I know it’s Sydney, but if a network is gonna spend so much money on bidding for tv rights for a sport, even if that sport isn’t the #1 in some states, they have the rights. It’s their duty to show it. Otherwise why don’t they just let Nine bid for rights for Sydney & Brisbane, and let another channel have the rights to show it in other states.

  6. Channel Nine ; World wide Graveyard for Rugby.

Why can’t WA get proper coverage of the rugby world cup. What a waste of the multi channel facility .Why do the chumps at Channel 9 chose to run re runs of re runs that are often 20 to 30 years old . Far better to air I Love Lucy than this special sporting event.

  7. That is all totally crazy and very very poor……11.5 hour delay for the England game and 2 hour delay for the supposedly live Australian game for Perth……When will we see the final ? On Christmas Day?

  8. F*** OFF Channel 9. 1:40am for us Melbournians? Nine treat every sport with nothing but disrespect. This is the f***ing World Cup! We even get a 1/2 hour delay on Sunday for the Australian game. I hate channel 9 and now i hate them even more. They are going to Ruin the Olympics. Mark my word. Wish they never got them. .

  9. Nine sucks with WA and I thought with the time difference for us it would be shown live, at least on Gem and Go.

It just shows you how broke the ARU were with the last broadcast rights. They showed the game last time live on Gem on a Saturday night that started at the half time mark of the live WCE game on 10.

Shame 9! As I was really looking forward to watching this RWC. At least SBS manage to show the World Cup live on both of their channels!

  10. “It’s the biggest weekend of football ever when Wide World of Sports showcases 18 hours of rugby league and rugby union – three days of crunching combat this Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Channel Nine.”

Did Nine have a straight face writing that….It’s that big they thought it deserved a four hour delay. It’s prob live in Samoa, but Adelaide…nope.
This is why the internet is so great. Really really really hope Nine don’t get the next NRL rights. Not really interested in Rugby Union but it’s the World Cup. Would be nice to have it live. But 1.40am, 4 hours late, F*** that.

  11. I didn’t read the schedule correctly. Why is Melb, Ade and Perth getting the Aus v Italy RWC game 30 minutes after it has begun? I don’t get it. Why the 30 minute difference when we were told all Aus games would be live FTA?

  12. Glad you corrected the report David, Triple M reports that the Melbourne/Newcastle game will be Live into Melbourne.. your report earlier didn’t have Melbourne getting it live.

  13. @I Hate Sport

I have no idea what the ARU were thinking when deciding to go with Nine. They would have known Nine are contractually obliged to show NRL finals live in Sydney and Brisbane. They should have also known GTV Nine are protective of AFL and don’t run other sports against it. The sooner Nine has no sport the better. I can’t imagine what they’ll do to the Olympics nezt year. Will be a dogs breakfast for sure.

  14. GTV Channel 9 has screwed over Melbourne sports fans for so long, only two hours of coverage of cricket at the MCG (which will be back this summer), No NRL, No rugby world cup, No nothing. This is a world sporting event, and the Head of Programming at GTV does not have any interest in any code of rugby!

  15. Getting Foxtel on 21st Sept. Will have to put up with this for the first 10 days, but after this, bye bye Free To Air TV, Hello Fox, no Eddie for me in 2012 and no more Megawall and delayed Australian Open Tennis 😀

  16. Yes glad I just got fox. Every RWC game live in HD and ad free.

Big weekend with NRL finals, RWC, US open, F1 monza, Aus test cricket, EPL, cycling in spain etc etc.
