ACCC: Austar takeover revealed on November 30
Austar shareholders and viewers have to wait a little longer before knowing the regional Pay TV provider's future.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will reveal on November 30 whether it has approved Foxtel’s takeover bid of regional Pay TV provider Austar.
This follows earlier delays with an outcome previously expected on September 8th.
The ACCC has previously said that the $2.5 billion bid “is likely to result in a substantial lessening of competition” in the pay-TV services market.
A lack of clarity in Austar’s future may also impact the Pay TV provider adding new channels, including FX.

Austar and Foxtel should Wake up and smell 2011 and stop living in 1995 and the loser who came up with the MA15+ rules should get professional help and fast.
It wont make any difference since Austar and Foxtel are 3rd rate to Sky. It will still have buthered to MA films that are an insult to horror fans and no horror channel. Aussie cable is clearly the worst in the world. Why do we get such cr*ppy cable down under?
For those who have yet to actually read the ACCC comments (i.e most poster above) the main issue the ACCC has is not the competitive landscape today, but the one that may exist once the NBN rolls out. Leaving aside those second guessing the NBN rollout (for now its happening), its still a pretty controversial interpretation of ‘competition’. Be interesting to see what the ACCC decides.

Peter
Even if Foxtel does take over nothing will change and I still will refuse to watch it if a channel I like is not provided. And Showtime horror or Foxtel on demand does not count.
Foxtel and Austar not competing in each others market has nothing to do with the ACCC. Any company can provide services or refuse service to who ever or wherever they like.
If the ACCC don’t allow this deal to go though then they must have rocks for brains!.
The ACCC doesn’t need to ‘allow’ foxtel to compete in regional areas, foxtel Chooses not to due to a gentlemen’s agreementwith Auster more than a decade ago.
Yeah I’m not too sure how they can claim it’s lessening competition. We’re forced to have the pathetic Austar service, we cannot sign up to Foxtel.
The sooner the better.
As far as the channel part of this equation, FX is a Newscorp channel regardless…..
How is Austar even a competitor when it is only available where foxtel isn’t?
What competition?! I can’t even get foxtel where I live. We get shafted with Austar here. If the ACCC want competition then allow Foxtel to service All regions.
