Bear Grylls to lead local Mantracker?

Bear Grylls will lead an Australian adaptation of Canada's Mantracker in which contestants through the Outback in a race against the clock.

ActiveTV (The Amazing Race Australia, Prank Patrol) will produce a local version of Canada’s outdoor reality series Mantracker featuring Bear Grylls.

The Man vs Wild star will play an expert “Mantracker”, joined by an indigenous local guide, who will track contestants through the  Outback, rainforests and mountain ranges.

Contestants have a map, a compass and 36 hours to cross 40km of rugged terrain.

The original show has run on Canada’s OLN for seven seasons and is also seen in the US on Discovery Science Channel.

“We’re very excited about bringing this hit Canadian format to Australia and anticipate a great response from the Australian networks,” said Amanda Peppard, from ActiveTV.

ActiveTV snared the first format sale for Mantracker in a deal with Canada’s Kelencontent.

UPDATE: Despite the initial report, I am now hearing advice that Bear Grylls will not be involved in this project.

  1. Yes! I’ve been watching a bit of Mantracker on YouTube and was thinking it’d go alright in an Australian setting. Don’t know why they feel they have to import someone for the main role, but the inclusion of an Aboriginal tracker will be interesting.

  2. This is not broad enough to work on Australia’s free to air networks. Bear hasn’t sustained high enough ratings on sbs to make this a viable format. Sadly this will die on thr vine.
