Early work begins on The Block

The next site for The Block is undergoing change ahead of its 2012 season on Nine.

The next site for The Block is undergoing change ahead of its 2012 season on Nine.

As first revealed by TV Tonight, the derelict homes are situated on the corner of Dorcas and Montague Streets in South Melbourne.

Now a construction site, they are heavily-boarded up as work begins on the backyards, presumably in readiness for the new teams to move onto the site.

Switching to four adjacent properties in a stripped-season worked so well this year that Nine is again anticipating another big season, widely tipped to launch the year with the show (and if all goes well even a second season later in the year?).

With renovations to take place through spring and summer, expect lots of shots of the nearby South Melbourne beach. And hopefully an appearance from Father Bob Maguire from the church across the road…

  1. On behalf of myself & a few others, here’s The Block 2012 viewer wishlist:

    1) a far more even platform for competitors than last year (whereby one of the houses seemingly required more work than the others & the winning house was the only one with uninterrupted city views);
    2) someone to (intellectually) slap some sense into that excessively ‘bubbly’ and sometimes offensive female co-host & that obnoxiously uncool foreman (sorry);
    3) another bunch of (refreshingly!) likeable participants as per 2011 season, unlike 2010’s more ‘controversial’ (ie. bitchy) / polarising / ‘unlikeable’ players;
    4) for Pete’s sake (a friend of mine), he says bring back this year’s winning builder! (whatshisname from the Polly Woz house). Apparently sitting him nude in the spa should just about stitch up the ratings. But it’s a family show, so semi-nude will do. Hmm, fat chance.
    5) a slightly more educational, mature & environmental angle… make the show seem more important, responsible etc!
    6) invite & air the input &/or unbiased opinions from the neighbours? Apart from “tools down” curfews, this is always a relevant but much-forgotten aspect of renovations.
    7) a lot less blatant product placements & mentions unless they’re genuinely relevant. eg. the meetings in McDonalds every episode did get a bit much…
    8 ) again for Pete’s sake, we’d like to see a gay &/or lesbian couple that break down a few of those stereotypes that are so overdone on telly.
    9) throw in some comedians! Can you imagine someone like Judith Lucy getting involved? Or Tony Abbott?
    10) let the poor renovators go back home for a night or two – as a nice cheap prize maybe?

  2. Looks ok.What Nine need to to worry about now is how to fix their 7pm Woes for the rest of the year.2.5 men and Big Bang Theory can’t last forever for the parts of the year where they don’t show the block.Almost 2012 and they can’t find a solution that isn’t American gap filler to follow the News and Current Affairs Shows.Maybe ditching Charlie Sheen and putting on Karl and Leila with a News/Chat Show is the answer they need.

  3. According to reports in the Sunday Herald Sun (Melb) yesterday the contestants have already been selected and the taping starts this week. For a screening beginning in Feb 2012

  4. I am hoping channel 9 have a big sustainable eco friendly focus to help educate to a woder audience the need for adopting enery effieicent homes and this can be done in renovations too!

  5. I hope there are more renovations next year compared to “new build”.

    This year it seemed like they renovated a couple of rooms of the “existing” homes and then they were simply responsible for fitting out the new build which was all organised and constructed by Channel 9.
