SBS: Summer / Autumn highlights

A family living under the glare of cameras 24 / 7, a kitsch spy comedy and a documentary series on the Vietnamese community are some of SBS' upcoming highlights.

A second season of Go Back to Where You Came From, more Who Do You Think You Are?, kitsch spy comedy Danger 5 and a documentary series on the Vietnamese community Once Upon A Time in Cabramatta are some of the upcoming highlights for SBS.

Faces from the public broadcaster joined execs and media for the launch of its Summer / Autumn season, at the Flying Fish Restaurant in Sydney yesterday.

Also coming up are a local version of the observational series with a family living under the glare of cameras 24 / 7, The Family (pictured, top), talent search series Bollywood Star, and more food and factuals.

In attendance were Julia Zemiro, Richard Morecroft, Lily Serna, Karla Grant, John Wood, Vince Colosimo, Ricardo Goncalves, and Craig Foster.

Michael Ebeid, newly-installed SBS Managing Director, was joined by Peter Newman commissioning editor and programmer Jane Roscoe.

Ebeid stressed the need for increased triennial funding next May but talked of the broadcaster’s role.

SBS pushes the boundaries of television content and actively invests time and resources into developing bold and original programming that other broadcasters shy away from and our summer/autumn line-up continues that tradition. We’re also continuing the conversation with our audiences off-air using sbs.com.au and social media to reach them, wherever they are,” he said.

Summer/autumn highlights include:

· New factual entertainment series, Bollywood Star, a four-part series following the search for an Australian Bollywood star who will win the prize of a lifetime – a part in a Bollywood movie.

· Hotly anticipated landmark observational documentary series, The Family (pictured, top), comes to SBS in November revealing an incredible, intimate portrait of family life in Australia.

· Kitsch, retro action comedy series Danger 5  (pictured centre)follows a team of five international, super skilled, super good-looking spies on a mission to kill Hitler.

· Following on from Immigration Nation, Once Upon A Time in Cabramatta is the untold story of how the Vietnamese community overcame the odds and found their place in multicultural Australia.

· Peter Kuruvita’s My Sri Lanka sees the renowned Sydney chef take a journey through his ancestral home of Sri Lanka. Peter journeys across the country to discover its authentic cuisine.

· In Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong, Luke takes viewers on a culinary journey across the Greater Mekong region of Southeast Asia.

· A fourth series of Who Do You Think You Are? follows the journeys of six well-known Australians – actor Vince Colosimo, funny man Shaun Micallef, AFL legend Michael O’Loughlin, actress Melissa George, journalist Kerry O’Brien and actor John Wood (pictured below).

Other commissioned highlights include; Scarlet Road, Tall Man and Singapore 1942.

Acquired Content:
· From the makers of One Born Every Minute comes 24 Hours in A&E. With 70 cameras filming round the clock for 28 days, the series offers unprecedented access to one of Britain’s busiest A&E departments, at King’s College Hospital.

· Drama series The Promise, directed by BAFTA winning writer/ director Peter Kominsky, follows 18-year-old Londoner Erin as she spends summer in Israel and discovers the disturbing truths about her grandfather’s time in Palestine and the atrocities he witnessed in the 1940s.

· Freddy Flintoff Vs The World sees the cricket legend try his hand at some of the most extreme sports on offer across the world.

Other acquired highlights include Toughest Place To Be, Vet Adventures and Mad Men.

SBS also announced today that it has commissioned a second series of Go Back To Where You Came From, which will broadcast on SBS ONE in 2012. This provocative series aired to critical and audience acclaim in 2011 and series two will push the boundaries of the format even further.

In other new commissions, Peter Kuruvita gets a new series –Island Feast with Peter Kuruvita. Island Feast sees Peter embark on an island hopping adventure from the Philippines, onto Indonesia, then across to Vanuatu and finally to the remote South Pacific and the Cook Islands. As he explores some of the world’s most exotic dishes, cultures and locations, Peter will be meeting the people, learning their customs and cooking their dishes.

Ongoing and returning programs include: RocKwiz, Eurovision, Letter and Numbers, Dateline, Insight, Living Black, UEFA Champions and Europa Leagues, FA Cup Final and Paris-Roubaix.

  1. not a bad lineup for good old sbs. I am looking forward to a new series of Who do you think you are? As for the rest well i might give it a go. THe picture of the “family” has guy who is at the top centre of that picture, he looks a bit like David Basheer.

  2. I like the look of Once upon a time in Cabramatta, and a few others. I also like the look of the two eldest sons in the picture 🙂

  3. None of those shows is of interest to me – in particular the reality rubbish.
    Thank goodness for Foxtel – with FTA you get what you pay for these days.

  4. People will probably be fed up with me going on about it but…….where are the current seasons of Shameless and Skins – Season 5 of Skins has yet to be shown here – hello SBS, anyone home?
