Cameras roll on Reef Doctors

Filming begins today in Far North Queensland on TEN's new drama series Reef Doctors.

Filming begins today in Far North Queensland on TEN’s new drama series Reef Doctors, the first primetime drama production by successful children’s producer, Jonathan M Shiff Productions.

Lisa McCune, who is also a co-producer, plays Sam, described as “a GP and single mother with a freespirit and a determination – who has an unusual hobby: venom. Running the remote Hope Island Clinic, Sam is an accomplished doctor, who with her team, looks after the residents of all the neighbouring islands, as well as the holiday makers and thrill seekers who visit the area. The residents of the tiny island pull together through thick and thin, proving that there are many different definitions of the term ‘family.'”

She is joined by Rohan Nichol (Killing Time, Red Dog, Rush), Matt Day (Tangle, PaperGiants: The Birth of Cleo, Rake), Richard Brancatisano (Underbelly: Razor, Home & Away); Tasneem Roc (Crownies, East West 101, Spirited); Andrew Ryan (Tomorrow When The War Began, The Jesters), German actress Susan Hoecke (Sturm der Liebe, Der Lehrer, 18 – Allein under Mädchen), Rod Mullinar (Satisfaction, Shortland St, All Saints, Dead Calm), Kristof Piechocki (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) and newcomers Justin Holborow and Chloe Bayliss.

The 13 hour series is directed by Colin Budds (The Elephant Princess, H2O Just Add Water, Stingers) and Grant Brown (Rush, Crownies, Underbelly).

Jonathan M Shiff said “With the production of Reef Doctors we are re-introducing a genre for Australia that is long overdue – family action adventure, with high production values and wonderful characters.”

Lisa McCune added, “We have assembled a great cast for the series and can’t wait to start filming next week in FNQ. The humour and heart of this piece will resonate deeply with Australians as well as our international audiences.”

It premieres on TEN in 2012.

  1. I am really looking forward to this sereis as I am a huge fan of Lisa McCune, and quite a few of the other stars that are mentioned. I just hope it goes longer than some of the other series that are shown, you just start getting into them and then they say the last eppisode for the year, they need to run longer or for the year would be great! Bring it on early in 2012 I say….Please!

  2. This looks to be really good. I am looking forward too it. Makes up for losing Sea Patrol this year. Ten’s drama slate is looking good as they also have Offspring and Neighbours.

  3. That was quick but I’d say there was much more interest in that Prisoner remake than on this. Inside Out would have had at least huge initial ratings depending on how good it was but this will just be another Ten dud from the start.

  4. Wondered what Jonathan M Shiff Productions have been doing recently – in fact, I almost emailed you the other day to see if you’d heard anything. They’ve always managed to produce solidly good quality kids TV, so here’s hoping their first adult / family series is up to the same high standard.
