Defamation win against Underbelly

A former NSW policewoman has won a defamation case against Nine over her depiction in Underbelly: The Golden Mile.

Former NSW policewoman Wendy Hatfield has won a defamation case against Underbelly producers Screentime, TCN Channel Nine and Nine Network Australia.

Ms. Hatfield sued over Underbelly: The Golden Mile after it depicted a policewoman named ‘Wendy’ (Jessica Tovey) in a sexual relationship with nightclub owner John Ibrahim (Firass Dirani) in the 1990s.

She denied ever having a sexual relationship with Ibrahim.

She claimed the show caused her to be brought into hatred, ridicule and contempt and gravely injured her character.

The Supreme Court ruled in her favour, but all other settlement details are to remain confidential.

Last year she also won $59,000 from the publishers of the Underbelly: The Golden Mile book.

Screentime Producers had previously said some of the characters were fictional hybrids based on a number of different people, due to legal reasons.
