Government puts TV licence review on hold until 2013

The Federal Government has placed a moratorium on any new commercial TV broadcasting licences being granted before 2013.

The Federal Government has placed a moratorium on any new commercial TV broadcasting licences being granted before 2013.

Communications minister Stephen Conroy won’t be able to appoint a review of license allocations before January 2013.

That’s sure to please the big guys, Seven, Nine and TEN …and for that matter ABC, SBS and Foxtel / Austar too.

Lobby group Free TV Australia recently argued against the government issuing any new licenses.

Cabinet minister Anthony Albanese said the government also wanted to delay granting any licences until the Convergence Review was completed, due in March 2012.

  1. the goverment needs to do this allow foxtel to have 2 free to air channels and allow 7 9 and 10 to have 5 free to air channels and allow sbs and abc to have as many channels as they like.

vote for it people it the only way to get free to air back on track

  2. If there is a new commerical lisence to be granted i would much like SBS to get it. It would mean that they would haave more money to create better content, rather living from paycheck to paycheck like they do now. Although if you got investors on it it could be worse.

  3. what’s the point of another licence? It will only give us more of the same in fact it will be worse because it will see numbers further fragmented and more reliance on infomercials, product placements, trashy US cable shows and so on – because we’re already seeing the existing networks do this now, a new entrant will only make this worse.

Like when the Nova radio stations started they promised to shake things up and be something different. Yes they did it for a while but after a while the commercial realities set in and they then forget about what makes them “different” and they just become like the others.

  4. Are we gonna let the goverment decide this? F**k the TV license review!!! People, you have the right to fight what the stupid goverment is doing right now. Don’t wait till 2013 to make it happen. Australia must keep pace with the rest of the world and it must do so now.

  5. Just give a license to Foxtel. they already buy all the good shows off channel 7 9 and 10 to show on pay tv this way foxtel can show the shows they get off 7 9 and 10 on free to air and still be making money from the show and we will get to see the show for free and they can run all there pay tv adds for free this way we are both happy.

here are some names that it can be called
    foxtel 4 all
    foxtel free
    channel foxtel
    free fox
    super fox

we need foxtel on free tv now

  6. As much as I may hate to say it, I think we need to give either FOX, CBS, ABC (America) or (even) NBC the chance to bid for a commercial license. Think about it- they have tons of cash which they could just throw at us for productions. At the same time, 4 commercial networks might be too much- audiences are diluted enough already.

  7. Just give a license to Foxtel, surely they’d have the content to be able to make a channel or two. Would benefit them too as they’d be able to buy sports on the anti-siphoning list.

  8. Come on bring on a 4th free to air TV channel to get more competition and hold the others accountable for their actions. Seven’s handling of Rafters is a sign of sheer arrogance whilst the other two haven’t made a good drama in years.

  9. Right on Bazza, competition and private enterprise, the discipline of the holy market are all wonderful things, until it’s *your* business that’s threatened by them. Then you run to the government and look for protection and handouts.

  10. I take the other view.

As long as proper scrutiny was place on the proposed network I think the competition might get the idiots at 7 & 9 to wake up to themselves an realize they actually need to do descent TV and not just the s**t they’ve been rolling out the last few years.

Besides more descent international content coming into Australia the better.

  11. So we should let contracts for maintenance and piloting of our airliners go to the lowest bidder, as “competition is good”… but TV, now that needs industry protection, as it’s a vital service to the nation.
