Is it curtains for Good News World?

Tonight's episode of Good News World may well be the last for the forseeable future.

If you’re a fan of Good News World, or more likely Good News Week, you may want to tune in tonight for the season finale.

It may be the last you’ll see of the show for a while.

The TEN comedy show hasn’t yet been renewed for 2012 and after dire ratings (last week just 165,000 viewers) the prospect of returning isn’t great.

TEN endeavoured to reinvent the show mid-year from the panel-driven Good News Week to the sketch-based Good News World, described as “Saturday Night Live meets The Daily Show with an Aussie twist.”

The format has undergone change numerous times, including from 30 to 60 minutes, from ABC to TEN, and versions as Good News Weekend (1998) and GNW Night Lite (1999). It was even brought back from the dead after 8 years off air!

So it may yet have another life if it isn’t renewed.

It’s a swift fall for host Paul McDermott who only last year was nominated for a Gold Logie Award, but McDermott is a great talent (especially when paired with Robins) so I hope there are new projects for 2012.

It airs at 10:30pm tonight on TEN.

  1. It was the musical chairs changing of the starting times that killed the show in the end.I won’t forget the good days when they paired it initially with the Cleveland show.

  2. Decided to have another look after tuning out at the beginning of the new format,no improvement I see.A lot of comedic talent who must hate going to work at the moment but I guess they have to eat.

  3. Like @Phoenix727 I have a video memory of this. Mine is from GNW Night Lite (on Ten). I attended a recording and have preserved a partial recording of this. The Flacco and Sandman sketches I captured – didn’t digitise the rest – are what I fondly remember from this time, and how I would like GNW to be frozen in my mind.

To those who are new to GNW now, you don’t know what you have missed.

Time to move on, GNW, in all its forms.

  4. Its on too late – the busiest time of the year for lots of industries, and people need to get up earlier than normal!! How about just screening it next year – you are wasting your time now and making the show look crap.. it is pretty good – but just cant watch it at that timeslot..

  5. @steve sidney agreed, can’t stand it, not terribly funny & i dont really enjoy watching bald purple puppets that kinda resemble, erm well, nuff said! i like Sammy J by himself though as i’ve seen his standup special on ABC, so i dunno it just doesn’t translate to GNW.
As others have said, don’t know why they messed with the format, loved it before, still watch it a bit now but tends to be more background viewing.

  6. I agree with the posters calling for a return of the old format. Friday 8.30 for half an hour like it used to be when it was on the ABC. I still have a VHS tape of an episode from back then floating around somewhere, funny stuff.
