Pele talks to The World Game

Brazilian football legend, Pele, will speak to Craig Foster on SBS sports show The World Game.

SBS sports show The World Game has itself a bit of a coup next week with Brazilian football legend, Pele, to speak exclusively to Craig Foster from Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, Pele talks about his visits to Australia and his experience playing against Australian midfielder Ray Richards.

“The game when we played, and it was a very difficult game, a tough game, he (Ray) was very good at marking but honest too. Always I remember because I play against a lot of players, big names like Bobby Moore and Beckenbauer, but he was one of the players who I remember because he marked very well.

Pele, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also talks about the origins of his nickname Pele.

“Today I love (the name) Pele, I thank god for Pele. But when I was young… I was very proud with the name Edson. Then the kids start to call me Pele. I don’t know why, if I did some mistake. Then I start to fight with everyone saying no my name is Edson. I went to the school and I fight with the kids in the class and I get two days suspended and then the whole school start to call me Pele.”

Monday Nov. 21 at 9:30pm on SBS TWO with a replay at 11:30pm on SBS ONE.

  1. This looks good i will watch, Pele is arguably the best player of his generation, and still commands respect amongst the footballing community. A very good but predictable get over any other network, this is partly because of SBS’s profile as a footballing network.

  2. “SBS sports show,” eh? Could we have not done a slight bit of research to find out that this is a football show only?

BTW, any bets on how many times Craig Foster mentioned Barcelona during the interview?
