Returning: Boardwalk Empire

One of the year's most acclaimed dramas returns to screens this weekend.

One of the year’s most acclaimed dramas returns to screens this weekend, as Boardwalk Empire returns.

This season Jack Huston and Gretchen Mol were promoted to series regulars, after appearing in several episodes during the first season.

Set a few months after the end of Season 1, the 12 new episodes of Boardwalk Empire take place in 1921, after Nucky and his lieutenants – including young WWI veteran Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt), whom Nucky helped raise – appeared to solidify their power by successfully rigging an election and getting a Nucky crony elected as Mayor.

However, after a bloody KKK attack at Chalky White’s (Michael Kenneth Williams) bootleg warehouse, Nucky finds his hold on Atlantic City weakened, first by federal agents who arrest him for election fraud and ransack his office, then by members of his own inner circle and even his family, who align themselves with Jimmy’s father, the aging Commodore Louis Kaestner (Dabney Coleman), in an attempt to oust Nucky altogether.

All the while, mobsters like Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza), Meyer Lansky (Anatol Yusef) and Al Capone (Stephen Graham) wait in the wings, looking for the right opportunity to grab a bigger piece of Nucky’s pie.

Sunday November 27 at 7.30pm on Showcase.
