ABC drama The Slap has been sold to US Pay TV provider DirecTV and Canadian public broadcaster TVOntario.
DirecTV has previously picked up other Aussie content including Underbelly.
The 8 part drama, based on Christos Tsiolkas’ bestseller, was produced by Matchbox Pictures, majority owned by NBCU.
It has already sold to Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, other territories in Eastern Europe and Asia, plus the UK where it has won an average audience of 830,500 (4% share), three times the average for the BBC4 timeslot.
International interest also led to AFACT shutting down illegal pirate websites that were linking to torrents of the show.
Last night it was ABC1’s top rating show on 832,000.
The final episode airs next week.

The Slap was wrtitten by a Pseudo Socialist for the entertainment of the Neurotic Middle Classes ! Where are Australia’s real revolutionary writers and filmmakers ?
Fortunately Rob, few people agree with you.
average book, below average tv
Yeah, chris, the population is roughly 3x ours, but that would equate to ~270k for 4% here, which doesn’t happen. Most programmes struggle to hit 200k, 250k even on a higher percentage. I guess it’s just a bit like Melbourne here, people watch TV more.
i reckon consistent ratings of 900 000 or so, each week, is preety good
Well, jamesj, i would guess the huge difference in population might make a small difference
Why can’t the other channels make content like this instead of just re-runing the same formula driven dirvel like CSI and The Mentalist
Pretty amazing that almost as many people in the UK are seeing this series as here. It’s amazing what 4% can get you in the UK compared to here!
Pietro, yes, Blu-ray comes out on December 1. But be warned, because Hopscotch are releasing it the price has shot up to $60. I’d rather my money go back into ABC through ABC DVD.
And I bet they see it in HD. I’m hoping there will be a Blu-ray.
wow! it is doing excellent overseas! well done to the producers.
This is a great Aussie drama – just really well executed – it deserves to do well.
