Tour of Duty: Australia’s Secret War: trailer

TEN's documentary on Australia’s Special Forces in Afghanistan by investigative journalist Chris Masters looks like a ripper.

TEN’s documentary on Australia’s Special Forces in Afghanistan by investigative journalist and four time Walkley winner Chris Masters looks like a ripper.

Set to air next Monday night, this has been three years in the making as TEN cameras accompany the Special Forces on several missions inside enemy lines, including night raids on Taliban hotspots, to a high risk undercover operation to destroy a multi-million dollar Taliban drug lab.

Australian Special Forces soldiers, some of whom have been wounded in action talk candidly of their experiences.

Cameras were also there on the tenth anniversary of September 11th.

Chris Masters says: “This program is a first in many ways. It is the first time news cameras were allowed to follow Australian Special Forces into action; the first time we see the Afghanistan war from their perspective and talk to the normally secretive SASR, Commandos and IRR at what passes for a front line. It is also the first time in my view that at last in Afghanistan we see the fight being taken to the enemy.”

TEN’s interim Head of News Dermot O’Brien says: “This must-see documentary is a significant effort by Chris Masters, one of Australia’s leading investigative journalists, which delivers a rare insight into Australia’s elite forces fighting in Afghanistan. Though not fought on our shores, this conflict affects the lives of Australian’s every single day, and it’s a privilege for TEN to be able to share the stories and unique experiences of the special forces soldiers who put themselves on the line for their country.”

It airs on Monday 28th November at 7.30pm -what a shame it isn’t in ratings season….

An extended 90 minute version airs on Monday 5th December at 9.30pm on ONE, which presumably has stronger content suited to its timeslot.

Warning: language.

  1. Although this doesn’t show the worst aspects of this type of war, it should give people a bit of an idea about what it’s like to be constantly in danger from death or serious injury whilst fighting a determined opponent in close contact (often measured in metres). You won’t get to see the really secret/dangerous missions because, well, some of the activities really are secret, but also because having untrained personnel with you is simply too dangerous in terms of giving away your position or having to worry about them during rapid withdrawal or extraction.

    Still highly recommended, though.

  2. Looks great. Can somebody explain why it would not be on in ratings season. Is it because it is toooo creditable for ten coming into 2012?? Look forward to seeing it
