‘Home made explosive device’ found outside WIN TV

Update: Bomb squad officers investigate a suspect device found outside WIN Television's Maroochydore offices.

A home-made explosive device was found on top of a rubbish bin outside WIN Television’s Maroochydore offices.

A witness said the device looked like a small 10cm-high gas cylinder and had a rubber band wrapped around the top with a trigger.

The Courier Mail reports shortly after 10am about 15 police officers evacuated all businesses on the CBD street.

They guarded the scene until bomb squad officers arrived from Brisbane around 11.30am local time.

Media reports have speculated that WIN News was the suspected target of the device.

According to the Brisbane Times, police could not confirm reports that said it was a home-made grenade, and described it only as a ‘‘suspect’’ device.

Update: Police took the device into a loading dock behind the shopping centre in the Maroochydore CBD where they detonated it at 1.15pm.

  1. Not actually a bomb and not targeted at WIN. Police confirmed yesterday it was a party popper bought from a nearby $2 shop that had its wrapping removed. The silver canister had been dropped in the street, was picked up by someone who then innocently placed it on top of a bin – randomly sparking a bomb scare. (I am a journalist at the newspaper in the same town where this happened.)

  2. It’s since been found the device was the bottom on a streamer popper and the person who left it there came forward, no charges had been laid according to the news last night.

Looks like an innocent mistake, a few years ago someone would have just knocked it into the bin and not gave it a 2nd though.
