If it’s Dinner for One it must be New Year’s Eve

ABC has the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Nine has Richard Wilkins and at SBS it just wouldn’t be New Year’s without Dinner for One.

This 18 minute comedy, made in Germany in 1963, has been played on SBS every New Year’s for longer than many of us can remember.

It has a cast of just two, British comedians Mary Warden as 90 year old Miss Sophy and Freddy Frinton as her butler -with the latter playing all her party guests.

This classic is also a festive staple on television stations in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, South Africa and a cult classic in Finland, Estonia, Faroe Islands and Austria.

Dinner For One – In keeping with SBS tradition, our annual screening of this perennial favourite. Dinner for One revolves around the aged Miss Sophy who celebrates her 90th birthday with her best friends, all of whom are actually dead. The result is that her increasingly inebriated butler is obliged to act out each role in turn.

8:30pm Saturday December 31 on SBS ONE.

I was quiet surprised to discover that there are at least Two different versions of this wonderful bit of fun. Sililiar looking sets, similiar looking, but different, cast, and filmed differently, but just as funny.

I believe SBS first showed this on 31 December 1989 so they’ve been running it on NYE for over 20 years!

As well as “Can’t Stop the Music” on Nine, Back to the Future also gets an airing every year on Ten.
