Karen Gillan to exit Doctor Who

Both Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be written during the next series of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who showrunner Steve Moffat has announced that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will both be written out during the next series.

The pair play husband and wife Amy Pond and Rory Williams.

Gillan, 24, has served two series and is off to pursue stage and film projects, including a BBC drama as Sixties model Jean Shrimpton.

The partnership of Gillan and Matt Smith as the Doctor has been a successful one, putting to rest any fears that preceded the exit of the highly-popular David Tennant. His co-star companions included Catherine Tate, Freema Agyeman and Billie Piper.

Moffat says it will be “heartbreaking storyline” -would we expect anything less?

  1. When the first show with Matt aired I was intrigued because I thought his new companion was going to be a child (sensible child, barmy doctor) and thought that might be interesting. However Karen won me over too. I enjoy the changes and dynamics created with new cast. Just when the honeymoon is over, you fall in love all over again.

  2. Best companion since Billie Piper. Pity she has to go, but that’s the Doctor for you. Can’t say I’ll miss Rory much though, his character never really jelled unfortunately.

  3. Amy has been my favourite of the new era companions and I’ll be upset to see her and Rozza go. But the show has always constantly made bold changes to keep things interesting.

  4. I have enjoyed everything Doctor Who stories, there are some that are worst than others, who cares its Doctor Who. It will be sad see them go, you need new companion(s) to new takes on old stories so the Doctor can react to them.
I felt sad when Sarah Jane left the Doctor, yet, when Leela came the stories were different and the Doctor reaction to Leela was different to Sarah or Jamie or Jo.
I think Moffat doing a great job, I just thought Russell T was begining wore thin.
I been watching the series since 1965, I do panels at con about the Doctor Who.
I its been a joy seen two in Tardis.

  5. Three to four years is usually enough for a companion or a Doctor.
I’ve very much enjoyed what Steven Moffat has done the last two years.
Another year or two will be enough. The show itself survives on continual change allowing different approaches and styles of storytelling.
But, oh dear, a “heart breaking ending”?
Can’t we have a happy ending for a change?

  6. @Barrie How has he “ruined” Doctor Who? just because you don’t like something he has done doesn’t make it automatically ruined. The ratings both here and the UK have been strong.

And I love it when fans tell us how long they’ve been watching the show, it makes you sound pompous so you’ve been watching it for 37 years, does my 5 years of watching Classic (on repeats and DVD) and New Who make my opinion less valid then yours?

  7. i like all the actors in this series but i just wish the moffit would make an exit – he has ruined a once good show. i’ve been watching since 1974 and really liked what russell t davies did with it

  8. With all due respect to those involved, I thought the Amy-Rory stories had run their course, & that it was becoming obvious that a change was necessary. Keeping them
on much longer would have made them have a tiresome legacy. Best wishes to
    both of the actors.

  9. @deedeedragons Well in other interviews Karen Gillan said if she leaves she wants Amy to leave with an impact and not to be brought back again and again.

I don’t want them to go yet, it’s been great having a companion team and a Doctor, just like the classic series.

  10. It will be sad to see them go, as it is with all his companions.

But on happier news just over a week before the xMas special and ABC is fast tracking it just hours after the UK, Yay!

  11. The Doctor and Amy was a good pairing, but Rory just added a very confusing element to the mix. Just seemed like a p*ssing contest between him and the Doctor, which then made The Doctor (especially in the 6th series) look like an ass. Miss the Russell T Davies era – light and shade, not just shade all the time. Ok, I’m done 🙂
