40% share ….and now it’s Hewitt vs Biggest Loser

Updated: Seven's coverage of the Australian Open helped the network to a whopping 40% share on Friday -and now Lleyton Hewitt becomes a second headache for TEN.

Seven’s Australian Open coverage of the Tomic-Dolgopolov tennis on Friday night pulled huge numbers -more than a headache for tonight’s “Super Sunday” launch on TEN.

The game may have averaged 1.25m for each of the separately-coded evening broadcasts but tellingly, it peaked at 1.92m viewers.

Seven pulled a huge 33.4% share on its Primary Channel, lifting the network to a whopping 40.7% share -double its nearest competitor. 7TWO peaked on Friday with 249,000 viewers between 6pm and 7pm.

It’s game on tonight as Tomic’s return to centre court against Roger Federer faces off against TEN.

Updated: As if tonight’s slam wasn’t enough of a headache for TEN, now Lleyton Hewitt will compete on the same night as the season premiere of The Biggest Loser.

Loser kicks off at 7pm while Seven’s coverage begins at 7:30pm AEDT. Hewitt plays in the second match of the night.

NIGHT SESSION
LISICKI, Sabine (GER) [14] vs SHARAPOVA, Maria (RUS) [4]
DJOKOVIC, Novak (SRB) [1] vs HEWITT, Lleyton (AUS)

At least for Loser the show isn’t as dependent on it’s opening night as a show like Homeland. Viewers can still join in as the week unfolds and get up to speed.

If Hewitt makes it to the Men’s Final look out. When he played Saffin in 2005 a cool 4.04 million of us tuned in -that’s more than the first MasterChef finale.

  1. “Hewitt vs Biggest Loser”.. haha how ironic. Hate to say it but the only Big Loser will be Hewitt tonight. Hope he puts up a fight but I can’t see it happening.

  2. How do they work out the figures for a tennis match like tonight where all states but w.a were in primetime? Do Perth’s figures get added to the percentage or aren’t they included because it was out of primetime?

  3. “Encore” is a repeat ‘as called for by an audience’. How many hundred thousand calls did Nine and TEN get for a repeat performance ‘by the audience’ before the original has been seen? A total misuse of the word. Proper word is “Repeat”.

  4. TEN have been fiddling with the watermark since just after lunch today…it was flashing from blue to yellow….later went really pale…and then they moved it from bottom right hand corner to top right hand corner….still up the top during the Project with Live beside it…Hmmmmm

  5. No doubt a bit of a relief for TEN with Lleyton during the second match for tomorrow night’s schedule, meaning it will probably only compete with The Glades / end of NCIS LA.

  6. I’ll be watching TEN and checking on the tennis during commercial breaks.

Looking through the Age’s Green Guide for this week, I’ve never seen a worse line-up in my life. If you’re not into wall to wall tennis or cricket, it’s just awful. The only saving grace during the week is a new series of The Good Wife.

  7. Won’t these figures just push up the asking price for the rights to cover the Aus Open come 2015? That is as well if Seven have to go it alone for the AFL again..

Plus I can see alot of people turning off the tennis if it appears early on Tomic won’t win. My mother certainly doesn’t invest 3 hours if the outcome is obvious after the 1st hour.. I can imagine many others doing the same..

  8. @Kenny , it appears “Encore” is the buzz word at the moment , TENS doing The Biggest Loser in the afternoons , Nine has Excess baggage encores , as you say etc etc etc.
@Michael , if that were only the case,90% ownership of HDTV , STB’s and we all get lame SD for sport , i shudder what happens with the Olympics on NIne , those who have Foxtel and pay for the 8HD channels are in for a real treat.

  9. The people responsible for tonight’s shows on Ch9 and the other 16 or so channels that are now available on FTA must be laughing their heads off reading these comments. It’s not a two horse race anymore.

  10. I’d hardly call the 180th ranked player losing to the 3rd ranked player a choke. If it was the other way around, sure.

Great sport tonight though. Tomic vs federer and the sixers vs hobart. Real shame 7 treat the viewer with such contempt and only show it in SD. All sport should be allowed to be simulcast on Fox Sports HD if the clowns at the FTA won’t pull their fingers out.

  11. There may be different viewers watching tennis….but hello….from the ratings….their is one huge chunk of the viewing public watching…..I am not one….but I will be watching Lleyton….I saw him play doubles recently….and he just places the ball beautifully….I will be in his corner.

  12. @ryaneco Hewitt is playing the best player in the world, someone who won 3 grand slams last year. LLeyton is no where this level anymore so a losing to Novak is not exactly ‘choking’.

Good luck to 10 this year, at least they are being pro active and trying something instead of sitting back and staying the same as other years.

  13. ten have previously launched its programs up against the australian open men’s final and still pulled good numbers – e.g. biggest loser, so you think you can dance australia. and not everyone watches tennis.

  14. Ryaneco, the Australian Open isn’t just watched by a tennis audience, it’s watched by the average Australian.

Ten better hope that Hewitt and Tomic’s straight sets losses happen very quickly.

  15. Hewitt will choke tomorrow unfortunately.
I think the audience for a tennis match is also different from those who want general entertainment Ten should still be able to get a sampling.
