Airdate: Outland

Here comes Outland, ABC's new comedy series centres around a gay sci-fi fan club and its five, ahem, members.

New ABC1 comedy Outland will premiere at 9:30pm Wednesday February 8th, following the season premiere of Gordon Street Tonight.

With Absolutely Fabulous on at 8pm, it’s a pretty tempting night of viewing.

The six-part comedy series centres around a gay science fiction fan club and the lives, loves and never-ending dramas of its five members.

Co-created by John Richards and Adam Richard, and produced by Princess Pictures.

There’s Max (Toby Truslove), insecure and looking for love; the sexually-adventurous, muffin-baking Andy (Paul Ireland); Rae (Christine Anu), the moral centre and unofficial head of the group; the high-camp, high-maintenance Fab (Adam Richard); and the wealthy but socially-inept Toby (Ben Gerrard). It’s an odd, and often precarious combination of personalities.

The five of them are forced to meet in each other’s homes when they are unceremoniously evicted from a larger science fiction club after Andy accidentally sets someone on fire. This new intimacy reveals parts of their lives that are far too personal for a club meeting.

The group’s stated purpose is to ‘explore the infinite and varied concepts and ideas behind the worlds of speculative fiction through discussion and debate’. Or, in other words, to sit around watching videos. Whichever way you put it, neither of these aims is ever achieved. Every meeting collapses into chaos as the fault-lines within the group are exposed. Relationships are destroyed and hilarity ensues as secrets and skeletons come crashing out of the closet.

Episode 1: Max – Wednesday February 8 at 9.30pm
Max is about to have a close encounter of the intimate kind. Dylan has invited himself in for coffee, but so has Max’s science fiction club. Will Max come out as a geek? Or is he destined to remain alone in his nerdy closet?

  1. I somehow don’t think Nine will be desperate enough to purchase this show, no matter what the outcome is. Btw I won’t be watching, I don’t really watch the ABC unless either Media Watch is on, a Chaser program is on, the local footy is on, or some sports program is on.

  2. This actually sounds interesting and unique and something that could amass something of a cult following and then I saw it was created by Adam Richard and from what I’ve seen of him I really don’t think we’re on the same wavelength. Will check it out but don’t hold out much hope.

  3. I’m proud of ABC for trying weird and wonderful things! Sounds hilarious and very unusual. I thought it was a BBC import, as it sounded too daring for Australia… I judged too soon 🙂
