Excess Baggage to weigh in first

Celebrity weight-loss series Excess Baggage is expected to launch for Nine ahead of the new series of The Block.

The Block managed to turn around Nine’s fortunes last year but the follow-up series isn’t expected to kick-off its 2012 ratings run.

Celebrity weight-loss series Excess Baggage is expected to launch ahead of the hit renovation show.

The series, hosted by Kate Ceberano, sees celebrities team up with non-celebrities in challenges staged around the country. They include Kevin Federline, Christine Anu, Kate DeAraugo, Gabby Millgate, Darryn Lyons, Brant Webb, Ajay Rochester and, in his third weight-loss show, former AFL champion Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico.

With The Biggest Loser also due on TEN, the untested Reality show could be a risky way for Nine to start the year, especially given The Block could surely have attracted eyeballs to its other new programming.

The Block homes are well-advanced on their renovations, but not yet completed.

Seven will avoid getting into the weight-loss game, focussing on a third season of My Kitchen Rules, including with a New Zealand team.

  1. I predict this will be a big hit for Nine, though I have never understood the entertainment value of weight loss shows. I’d rather watch grass grow. Britney’s ex sure has let himself go. I remember at the time of their marriage he was a very buff back-up dancer in her troupe. And this is Dipper’s third weight loss show? Well, statistics show 98% of people who lose weight dietingeventually put the weight back on, so he is hardly anything unusuals. Lots of football players, League players in particular, stack mountains of weight on after they retire.

  2. I’m not one for the Weight Loss show though I have seen a fair bit of the Biggest Loser over the years. This just looks like 9 trying to combat 10 with a nightly reality show for the first quarter of the year and they just happened to pick weight loss to air the exact same time as 10 airs the biggest loser. Smart move by 9 to add celebrities sure their not huge names i mean we have an Australian Idol winner who did nothing after she won. Then theres K-Fed who i guess is going to be the big ratings draw for this show seeing Britneys Ex try to loose weight. Who knows if this will be a success.

  3. i will give this a go i will give nine one thing they have got guts if they put it up aginst TBL which is almost a certanity since TBL always starts around early febuary and TBL is a well etsablished and sucessfull show so i wonder how this will go

  4. Well this is the first time in years I’ve been attracted to watching TBL… the last series I watched was when Grandfather Bob won. Ever since then I’ve been turned off by the couples/family angle however the Singles versions looks promising. Perhaps love will be found whilst kilos melt away? How romantic..

Yeah I’m skipping Nine’s copy cat. I’m done with seeing Ajay on screen and not interested in Ex Mr Britney either. Although it begs the question.. when will Nine air Big Brother? July/August perhaps??…

  5. The only similarity between tbl and excess is that they are both weight loss shows. Excess Baggage will surpass tbl this year and will be a ratings hit for 9. It is unlike any show seen on tv before and it’s going to be amazing to watch. Just wait and see

  6. I’m not sure how this show will go, but I don’t think The Block will have the same success it did last year. MKR will rate very well again this year.

  7. Celebrity Overhaul. It came out before Weight Loss, and indeed Celebrities, were popular subjects for reality shows. I liked it because it wasn’t a contrived competition, just a docu-diary, and seemed genuine.

  8. This is a knock off of the Biggest Loser put together by Fremantle who used to make TBL before Shine. Lots of elements have just been directly lifted. It’s disappointing to see.

  9. I think it was 9 that had a celebrity weight loss program a few years ago that was quite good and I think has legs but few celebrities are going to front up year after year to admit they are fat on tv. The biggest loser is getting tired so whoever launches first will probably win the weight war this year ala The Renovators and The Block even though The Block was far inferior television IMO.
