iView coming to more mobile devices

A deal with US cloud service Brightcove will enable ABC's iView to extend to more mobile devices, including iPhone.

The ABC will use US cloud content provider Brightcove to streamline its video catch-up service, iView.

The new digital platform will enable iView to improve the quality of video playback on some platforms according to the strength of a user’s bandwidth.

The deal will allow iView to become available on iPhone and expand its iPad service.

“We are pleased to be leveraging Brightcove’s technology to give our users an even better experience when watching ABC TV on iView” said Arul Baskaran, Controller, ABC TV Multiplatform.

“Operationally, the Brightcove platform is making it possible for us to focus on making iView more widely available on mobile devices on various operating systems.”

Mark Blair, Senior Director, Asia Pacific at Brightcove said, “ABC TV has been at the forefront of broadcast innovation for almost 60 years, and still sets the agenda as demonstrated with the success of iView.

“With Brightcove Video Cloud, the iView team can further harness the mobile revolution with an improved viewing experience tailored for each device type.”

iView recently extended to XBox LIVE.

  1. Hopefully this wont affect the freezone usage for PC usage (or even better make the PS3/TV based clients freezoned) (i know mobile devices wont get it free when on 3g though)

  2. oh there we go again a public broadcaser chooses to take the apple route….time to make it mandatory for when a application becomes available on one platform (e.g. Android) it is available on all platforms including Blackberry/RIM, Apple, Nokia etc.

  3. @ effdee – many commuters would find it useful on a train or other transport to watch shows on a small screen. Perhaps not dramas, but chat shows or news is mostly watched for the audio anyway.

Not to mention that iPhone users can stream video in apps to their TV.

  4. Looking on the Brightcove website, it looks as if Brightcove will be able to deliver video to iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices using a common platform. It also looks as if creating a player dedicated to iView for iOS and Android devices will also be possible.

  5. What iView needs, is a HTML5 version to be utilised for normal computers, as Flash is becoming very buggy of late. It consistently makes my computer run hot, which is not good for the fan in the long run.

Come on ABC, adopt HTML5 like the rest of the video services out there!

  6. I hope this is paving the way to HTML5. Flash is the devil, especially having the entire interface use it, not just the player itself.

Xander, on PS3 it just opens the website. I agree though, a proper app would be much better.

  7. @Bazza

The ABC is the public broadcaster, not the government broadcaster. That being said, I think you may have stumbled upon the great conspiracy that will lead to the downfall of the current federal government! 😛

  8. Interesting info. Now they just need to improve their PS3 client. It’s seriously falling behind, imo… e.g. it’d be nice if you could finally even just drive it straight from the BD Remote, instead of having to grab a controller every time… plus it always seems to be “slower” with often lower quality compared to other devices (e.g. its “Bandwidth” meter will read 1.1Mbps on my PS3 over Ethernet, versus 3–4Mbps on my iPad on WiFi).

  9. It’s curious that the government broadcaster funded with public money chooses to only support the closed platform of the number two player in smartphones.
