Sunday shake-up on TEN

Updated: TEN is set to kick off its new-look Sunday nights on January 22nd, a full three weeks ahead of the start of official ratings.

TEN is set to kick off its new-look Sunday nights on January 22nd, a full three weeks ahead of the start of official ratings.

The revamped Young Talent Time will premiere at 6:30pm followed by new episodes of Modern Family at 7:30pm, Zooey Deschanel sitcom New Girl at 8pm and new US drama Homeland at 8:30pm.

It’s a solid line-up from TEN in a bid to get the jump on Seven and Nine -but it will have to square off against the Men’s final of the Australian Open a week later. It also reveals Sunday line-ups to rivals, who now have a chance to tweak their schedules.

TEN’s chief programming officer, David Mott, told News Limited said the move was all about leading not following this year.

“We’ve regained our focus and this shows our confidence in our slate, as well as its depth,” he said.

“It’s the first of a few announcements we will be making.”

It’s not the first time TEN has thrown down the gauntlet at the start of the ratings year.

In 2009 it declared a full three week schedule in mid-January.

Updated: Merlin and Terra Nova will conclude next Sunday, January 15 (the latter has not yet been renewed by FOX) while It’s a Knockout ends at the special time of Friday January 20.

A second judge for Young Talent Time is still to be announced.

  1. Not bad as a line up I guess, though I still think they should have put Graham Norton at 8:30pm Sunday would have been better (and with that line-up a nice fit), Homeland at 9:30pm then would be a good time too.

  2. Given that James Warburton was legally bound to have no involvement in Ten until this month then he has inherited this programming, including the commissioned Australian production, from a team that has been there for well over a decade. If he adopts a radical approach (never a good career move in commercial TV) and it fails then he is in trouble and without a job. If he adopts a conservative approach then he can at least hope that a few shows may emerge which gives Ten some credibility with both viewers and advertisers. Why don’t you seek an interview with him David and ask a few hard questions? Ten’s shareholders would be most interested.

  3. TEN are stupid. Sorry but they are. When it comes to premiering why do it in a period where nothing counts. By the time the first week of the ratings come around they will be sitting ducks. They have the Australian Open to contend with plus the fact its still summer. I am still out at 6:30pm on a Sunday. TEN just have no idea. Warburton is following what they have done in the past. Look where that has got them. I thought he was brought in to help but he just seems to be following the same path. Sorry but to waste 3 weeks of programming is just ridiculous especially when TEN haven’t got that much content.

TEN won’t change in 2012 so for all i care they can do what they want to self destruct. TEN if you have any brains you would hold back but it seems the brains are not there.

  4. Will YTT have audience voting like Idol, X Facter et al? Or will it be like the old style talent shows and just have a couple of judges? Without the audience being able to vote I’m not really convinced it will work as that’s what people expect now.

  5. Underbelly has gotten away with worse in regards to nudity and violence than Homeland could ever come close to. I see no need as to why they would cut any of it.

As for it lasting, it was without a doubt one of the best new series of 2011 for me, but waay too niche I agreed and will not last. Absolute shame for sure.

  6. @david Knox YTT I presume is a cheap talent show its not actually “made” like drama it’s thrown together reality rubbish!!! My point was there is no drama from Australia forgive me for not being more clearer.

  7. I think that Ten would be okay with figures of 600k for Homeland – I’d expect around 800k for the premiere. I doubt they’d make any cuts to it considering Nine airs nudity, drugs, swearing, etc in Underbelly at 8:30 and they never had any problems. I hope it rates well though, it’s a great show.

  8. Homeland at an 8.30 pm slot would be ok on Eleven, but on Ten a 10.30 pm is needed, as it’d need to get over 1 million viewers at 8.30, plus early in the show there’s heavity nudity.

  9. It’s good to finally see TEN remove the blue and yellow logo, feels refreshed now. Not sure about the footer ads during shows though, the new TEN logo takes up the whole screen basically.

  10. Yes!!! Young Talent Time will have the same success as Hey Hey It’s Saturday (or was it Wednesday????) had last year……..another one one will definitely bite the dust…

  11. @Mulder, that’s exactly the point isn’t it. No one trusts Ten anymore to keep shows on, which is exactly why no one watches their shows. Why bother, when they’ll take it off or move it anyway.
New Girl and Homeland are great shows, I hope they rate well, but I don’t think they will and if they don’t I have no doubt Ten will move them.

  12. Looking forward to New Girl, but it will be interesting to see how long any of them stay in these timeslots. Hopefully they will be given a reasonable chance to build a following before being ‘bumped’… ha ha, when was the last time that happened??

  13. Is it me or are they relying on American programmes?? There’s not one homegrown listed there. I’m not even in Australia but I cannot understand Australia’s reluctance to make their own programmes, tv companies and it seems viewers seem to only care about ratings!!!! It’s a shame Aussie tv ecompanies cannot see that overseas viewers like Aussie drama, rescue, rush, sea patrol were all loved here in the uk and because of your precious ratings they got the axe??? American tv is taking over and to be honest it isn’t all that good, it’s just no one seems to be challenging it !!
