WIN snubs ARIA countdown

By David Knox on January 2, 2012 / Filed Under Programming 24

As many readers would know Bruce Gordon’s WIN TV doesn’t always play ball with the Nine Network.

Recently it ditched the 4:30pm Nine Afternoon News in Adelaide and Perth in favour of 60s sitcoms F-Troop and Gilligans Island.

And the differences are starting early in 2012 with WIN opting not to play the New Year’s Eve 2011 ARIA Countdown, presented by Richard Wilkins, on New Year’s Eve in Adelaide and Perth.

Instead viewers got the 2002 movie The Master of Disguise and John Farnham: The Acoustic Chapel Sessions.

What a NYE killer. Horrible movie programming. It’s almost as if WIN wanted to punish us further for living in the West.

Thanks to this trainwreck I actually spent more time with my family and friends on NYE though so uhh…thanks? (Still would have been great to have some music videos on in the background though.)

WIN might next drop Peter Overton 6pm news on their Southern NSW and Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo stations. Replaced by a combined hour of each local plus National and international news on one bulletin same as NBN do in Newcastle and Nthn NSW/Gold Coast.

Is that such a bad thing Andy B?

JJ, I’m with WIN on this one. Nine are just too greedy for their own good & in the last five years they’ve managed to destroy a close relationship formed with WIN since 1989. Let’s not forget in 2007 (when Nine stopped being ‘Still The One’) they demanded WIN pay 40% of all their ad revenue to Nine over a ten-year period, when their competitors at Prime & Southern Cross were only paying their metro networks 29%. It was eventually settled as a five-year contract that would gradually creep up to 35% each year.

I hope WIN stick it to Nine & then we’ll see how long *Nine* lasts without WIN (who screen Nine programming to about 45% of the country’s population). Then one day in the future I’d like to see WIN Corp take full control of Nine Co so we don’t see these little wars spring up every five or ten years.

I’m sure I’ve said something like this before… but it will forever be an uphill battle for Nine to regain the much coveted Number 1 status when two-fifths of its metro ‘network’ is owned by such a powerful affiliate.

Nine should have gone all out to buy Adelaide and Perth when they had the chance…

  6. JJ January 3, 2012 at 12:59 pm -

Nine should cut their feed to WIN when the current affiiliation contract finishes, and offer dual affiliation to either Prime or Sth Cross with Prime or Sthn Cross picking the best of Nine + Seven (Prime) Ten (Sthn Cross) to run on their main channel and programs not run on the main channel on a digital multi-channel. Then see how long WIN lasts without Nine + Go! + GEM? Legally this would be possible, moreso in areas where analogue is already switched off? As for Adelaide and Perth, I don’t think Seven and or TEN would entertain the idea, guessing they would rather see WIN owned Nine stations continue their downward slide?

It’s getting alot more like we have two channel Nine’s in Australia.

maybe The Master of Disguise actually was Richard Wilkins?

I still can’t belive we got a crap movie instead of music on NYE

I turned on to Nine to watch the ARIA special (in Perth) and was gutted to see that pathetic movie!!

Nine is losing me more and more as a viewer!

They might get me back if the put The View in GEM when the cricket is on though………….

@Kfed. I like Gilligan’s Island. Agree with you on your other point, though, music videos would have been better.

  12. KFed January 2, 2012 at 7:44 pm -

They picked one of the worst movies ever made, which completely destroyed the momentum of having the fireworks on in houses that had it on while having parties. Stupid. Music videos would have been a far better idea.

And honestly, 50-year-old sitcoms instead of news? I don’t know what WIN think they are doing – making Nine programming even worse is quite the achievement.

Honestly, it was amateurish in win land. That movie they played is notoriously painful to watch, it killed dana Carvey’s career.

They are also screwing up their relationship with Adelaide viewers like me with firing popular presenters and not supporting charities they used to support like The Variety Club. its going down the toilet.

Nine Afternoon News was also dropped across the WIN Regional network. This week I see WIN O&O stations have moved Alive & Cooking up to 3pm again with Entertainment Tonight sitting alongside F Troop at 5pm (but that means Nine Morning News is finally being aired in full). Affiliation negotiations must be really heating up between Nine Co & WIN Corp…

On another note, Imparja must be happy Yamba’s Playtime is getting screened across the country on the Nine, WIN & NBN networks at 3:30pm.

all these changes are happening in WIN Regional NSW and Victoria…. i think Bruce must be making a point

  16. Reubot January 2, 2012 at 2:35 pm -

The Master of Disguise…..what an insult to viewers.

  17. Mickche January 2, 2012 at 1:37 pm -

@Steve, i agree with you on the Wilkins part but have you actually seen Master of Disguise?

  18. Kenny January 2, 2012 at 12:05 pm -

Being in a WIN territory we actually watched this movie whereas it would have been ABC2 (Schools Spectacular plus “Psycho” which teen daughters had not seen) if the ARIA thing had been on WIN.
Often WIN and NBN shuffle programs a bit due to having to run ACA at 7pm due to News 6-7pm.

  19. Big V January 2, 2012 at 11:22 am -

I had much better progamming that night on Foxtel with Man United 2 Blackburn 3 being the highlight of the night in between the 9PM Family Fireworks.

  20. Kenny January 2, 2012 at 9:32 am -

Oh yes, ARIA was on Nine O&O Darwin too.

  21. Kenny January 2, 2012 at 9:30 am -

WIN regionals plus Canberra & Hobart ran the movie too. ARIA was only in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Newcastle on Nine O&Os.

  22. Jason D. January 2, 2012 at 8:58 am -

We live in a big country, there’s no point showing programming that would do well in certain regions but not other regions. There are a lot of shows like this, especially when you look at the ratings for different cities.

  23. Craig January 2, 2012 at 7:15 am -

Also they don’t (or didn’t) air Mike & Molly but instead chose a 2.5 Men re-run on that night. And if we’re picking I don’t think they have finished the final season of Gilmore Girls either, where Nine has. Not holding my breath for that one since it ended 4.5 years ago in the US.

  24. Steve January 2, 2012 at 6:28 am -

Sounds like a win for WIN viewers. No-one really wants to see Richard Wilkins.
