Airdate: Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong

SBS chef Luke Nguyen returns with a series through China, Myanmar, and Thailand following the Mekong River.

SBS chef Luke Nguyen returns next week with a new series that takes him through China, Myanmar, and Thailand following parts of the Mekong River.

In the first episode, he discovers dishes in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province in south-west China. He samples street food, explores Yiliang and learns about a Master Chef Pan’s roast duck and cooks in a stunning stone forest.

Celebrated chef Luke Nguyen returns in the third instalment of his popular food series to take a culinary journey across the Greater Mekong region of Southeast Asia.

Mirroring the diaspora of Vietnamese across the region, the series journeys across three of the six countries that make up the Greater Mekong region: Yunnan Province in China, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Beginning in south-west China, Luke explores the culinary cultures and centuries old traditions of Yunnan Province, from the Naxi people of Lijiang to the Dai communities of Xishuangbana.

Journeying south to Myanmar, Luke uncovers the unique foods of the former capital, Yangon. He learns the family recipes of Inle Lake communities and cooks with the hill tribes of the Shan State. Crossing the border into northern Thailand, Luke learns from local fishermen and Aka grandmothers that the mighty Mekong River is more than just a source of food – it is a way of life.

Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong 7:30pm Thursday, 23 February on SBS ONE.
