Bert Newton denies medical scare

Bert Newton denied reports he had undergone surgery in Singapore blaming a heavy cold not "heart issues".

Legendary performer Bert Newton has been rushed to hospital in Singapore amid early reports of heart surgery.

Newton, 73, who is performing in the stage musical Wicked, was reported to have suffered “heart issues” and complications from a serious virus.

But Newton denied reports he had undergone surgery after suffering “heart issues”.

Newton admitted he has been forced to take leave from the production to recover from a “heavy cold”.

He said he was instead discharged from the hospital after being prescribed antibiotics.

Last year Newton was hospitalised with pneumonia and forced to delay joining the cast for the Perth premiere.

His wife Patti has been filming the second series of Celebrity Apprentice but is heading to Singapore to be with her husband.

  1. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses so, either he was prescribed medication that won’t actually help (and, if broad spectrum, will actually hinder) his health, or he had something else in addition to a cold (such as an opportunistic bacterial infection).

Someone somewhere says that he’s getting on a bit and it might be heart trouble and then that is being reported as fact. We are more connected, have faster and more reliable communications, and it is easier to access information than ever before, and yet the general standard of mainstream journalism continues to decline.
