Daleks invade Melbourne

What on earth is a Dalek doing at the MCG? It's all for a good cause.

Daleks invading the MCG?

These familiar aliens are getting ready for tomorrow night’s Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular in Melbourne, presented by the the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and BBC Worldwide.

Inspired by the BBC Doctor Who Proms at Royal Albert Hall in London, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular will see the MSO, conducted by Ben Foster, premiere Murray Gold’s music from the two most recent television series.

The only Australian performances will be tomorrow at at the Plenary Hall, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This is billed as ‘the first live Doctor Who event outside the UK’ and both shows are already sold out.

Host Mark Sheppard, Sheppard, who appears as ex-FBI agent Canton Everett Delaware III in the two-part opener of season 6 of Doctor Who, will join the MSO on stage along with a host of live monsters such as Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon, Clockwork Robots, and the Silence.

The performance will be accompanied by a big screen presentation of key moments from the recent series and specially edited sequences showcasing Matt Smith’s performance as the Eleventh Doctor.

  1. The performance was awsome. The MSO superb. The singers brilliant. The videos and Dr Who monsters were spectacular but not over the top. Thoroughlty enjoyed it. Even if you were not a Dr Who fan the music was inspiring.

  2. Ta. Yes, it was excellent, I went to both performances, and the crowd were loving it. If BBC America doesn’t look at this and see how successful this was, and plan their own Doctor Who concerts in the US, they’re bonkers!

  3. Thanks David for this piece of news and I even saw it here first! It made me smile. Why wouldn’t they want to invade the MCG especially as they’re aliens via Britain. 😉 I too wondered why it was under Pay TV so it’s nice to have an answer. Also it stays around awhile so that’s pretty good as well. 🙂

  4. Sold out concert at the Plenary Hall, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. So why were they at the MCG? If they are sold out they obviously don’t need the publicity.
