Excess Baggage set to be trimmed?

Speculation is running rife that Nine is set to move Excess Baggage from its 7pm timeslot.

Speculation is running rife that Nine is set to move Excess Baggage from its 7pm timeslot.

Ad News, the Herald Sun and The Australian are all tipping the show to be removed from its timeslot after only three episodes have aired.

TV Tonight has also heard very strong rumours the show will not make it to the first week of ratings, beginning February 12th.

The weight-loss show started with 880,000 on Monday but finished with 555,000 by Thursday. By contrast The Biggest Loser finished the week with 734,000 viewers.

There are even suggestions Nine could move it from 7pm as early as Monday.

Dumping a big brand franchise before the start of official ratings would have to be some sort of TV record, but Nine was forced to bring the series forward after TEN surprised the market with The Biggest Loser back at 7pm.

At its 2012 launch Nine made strong commitments to stripping reality shows in the 7pm timeslot, as part of its push to “dominate early evenings.”

If it gets moved to a later slot or a multichannel, Nine’s options are likely to be The Big bang Theory before the next reality series is ready to roll.

Yesterday a Nine source told TV Tonight they had not been advised of any change to schedule.

  1. MC being at 7pm where it started, could see a return of some viewers, but not many. As a chef I’m not even going to start on why I’m all for MKR and I’m lost on MC! Obviously Nine will take advantage of the fact some viewers have turned away from Cravats, food on a tile and dilemmas galore and will want rooms, blocks and designers with a view!

As for EB that’s loosing weight over TBL. TBBT will be taking its theory back to 7pm and EB will be excess episodes, unaired.

  2. Sadly no commitment to fresh and interseting ideas. I am sorry, but too many obese people losing weight at once is too much. Same with Renovators and the block! Over saturation of a genre at the same time = viewer fatigue!

  3. When they’re promoting the paparazzi guy to sell the show, you know that EB is in serious trouble. My guess is it’ll be shifted to GO by the end of this week, or canned altogether.

  4. @ompman, yeah, I would love to have been at the meeting where this format was pitched to the network. “It’s a weight loss show, but there are no formal diet plans, no formal exercise routines, no weigh ins or lock downs, no real challenge to it, but on the upside, it does have Z-list celebrities”. Whoever greenlighted this bomb deserves to be sacked. I thought initially that the show might do well, but after watching it, I can see it is a poorly conceptualised hot mess. It has absolutely no chance whatsoever at 7pm weeknights, the MKR juggernaut is going to destroy it and peg TBL’s ratings back as well.

  5. Kate Cebrano is a better host than Akay Rochester and Hayley Lewis. Very natural and bubbly. The other 2 were and are stiff and insipid. Get Kate to host Loser… Or Dancing w the Stars!

  6. @allie yeah I agree I don’t think it will build earthier but I do think that nine should give it about a month to at least try and build if it hasn’t by then then move it and I totally agree that it didn’t need celebrity’s but as you say nine might have don that as a hook and as for barrel scraping they are right at the bottom with celebrities on this show
