Timing is everything in Comedy….
Speculation about whether Julia Gillard will hold her job as PM will impact on the possible future for ABC’s comedy At Home with Julia.
In December ABC1 Channel Controller Brendan Dahill told TV Tonight, conversations with producers Quail TV would commence when Parliament resumed in February.
“I’m open-minded about At Home with Julia coming back in 2012 but obviously she needs to be in power first. If she’s not, it loses the engine and the relevance.”
Talk of a leadership vote with Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd gathers momentum with each passing day.
If Gillard does exit The Lodge, ABC1 doesn’t want to be left with a series about a former PM.
But the ‘At Home with‘ format is flexible and could also lend itself to a spin-off….
TV Tonight understands detailed discussions with the ABC are yet to begin.
“Would we do At Home with Tony….?” he grins cheekily.

It would be called “On a 747 with Rudd”.
All i want to know is when is “The Gruen Transfer” returning?
Gruen is back for 2012.
@J Bar – the Rudd one might be the sequel in a few weeks.
Why don’t they do a prequel “At Home With Rudd” ?
I don’t buy that excuse.. I think the creators and writers just don’t know where to take the show.
There’s no doubt a challenge by Rudd is looming but he simply doesn’t have the numbers.. which means Julia will continue to be leader which everyone involved in this show would certainly know that as well.
Recent events like the media attention of the pending challenge and Australia Day would be gold material for the show. Oh well..
I loved AHWJ
It’s hard to imagine how anyone at the ABC could evaluate At Home With Julia and conclude that it was worth re-commissioning. It’s a worry.
Just like when the show was actually on, once again, comments equally split between people who loved it and hated it. I’m in the first camp. Thought it was fantastic – up there with our best local sitcoms. Would pay good $ to see a Rudd version.
Wasn’t funny the first time around.
Can we invest the $$$ in something more worthwhile than more of this. It was not good.
This show ran out of steam by the second episode. Joke’s been done, move on. Invest in a real Australian political drama ala The West Wing please.
Something tells me At Home With Rudd would look very similar to that leaked YouTube clip of him swearing at everyone. I’d watch that!
I think Australia would be better served if Amanda was actually the PM, while Julia could star in her own comedy show.
After all, she must have a brilliant satarist-come-court jester on the payrole… Labor’s continual stuff-ups just can’t be happening by themselves, can they…?
I’d watch “At Home with Rudd”
