Magda Szubanski comes out in support of gay marriage

Update: Magda Szubanski will speak to The Project about her support for gay marriage and will talk exclusively about her own personal story.

Kath & Kimstar Magda Szubanski has joined a public campaign in support of gay marriage.

Her statement, issued on Valentine’s Day, follows other endorsements by profile Australians including Hugh Jackman, Lizzy Gardiner, David Stratton and Stephan Elliott.

”I am 1000 per cent in favour of gay marriage. We pay taxes, fight wars for this country, nurse you when you are sick, make you laugh, sing and dance for you, play netball for you, star in your movies,” she said.

“And, chances are, gay people designed whatever it is you’re wearing.

“All Australians, including gay Australians, should have exactly the same rights, including the right to love, marry and take care of our partners.

“The law means that you could be a serial killer and have killed all of your spouses and yet you would still be considered fit to marry,” she said.

“But if you are gay, then you are not worthy of these same rights.”

”The law as it stands is unfair and it needs to be changed to reflect the wonderful, tolerant, live-and-let-live society Australians have created.”

A Galaxy poll released yesterday showed 62 per cent upport for same-sex marriage; 81 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 said they supported allowing homosexual couples to marry and a slight majority, 51 per cent, of voters aged 50 to 64 felt the same.

Yesterday, Labor MP Stephen Jones introduced a private member’s bill to legalise same-sex marriage to the House of Representatives. Australian Greens MP Adam Bandt and independent Andrew Wilkie delivered a similar bill.

UPDATE: Comedian and actress Magda Szubanski will speak exclusively to The Project tonight in support of the Australian Marriage Equality campaign. Magda joins a long list of local and international celebrities lending their support to legalise gay marriage.

She will be joining Carrie Bickmore, Charlie Pickering, Dave Hughes and Steve Price at The Project desk to make an impassioned Valentine’s Day plea for gay marriage and to talk exclusively about her own personal story for the very first time.  6.00pm tonight on TEN.

  1. Why is it considered brave? If your career is lagging say your gay. Instant boost to your career.
Being gay bnever hurt anyone in the business. Look at Molly meldrum. Nah she isn’t brave just attention seeking.

  2. Yeah, I’m confused, Magda’s never hidden it, for the past 10 or so years I have personally known she was gay; and have even seen her at Midsumma festival a number of times with a group of friends, one of them is related to me, which is how I knew she was gay.
Point is, I didn’t know she was ‘closeted’ until this morning with sunrise! I seriously thought everyone knew but no one gave a hoot because it’s, well, Magda and we (mostly) all love her…

  3. Well done Magda, you were great on The Project. You could not have picked a better place to talk exclusively about your own personal story for the first time. You have won the hearts of many tonight.

  4. I agree, you should be able to marry who you love and not be restricted by gender.

BTW just say the promo for the show and across the screen “The Project Exclusive…” or works to that effect.

  5. Good for her, although I did think this was reasonably well known, but good for her anyway. @Butterfly Carnage – no one is making you do anything you don’t want to do or be anything you don’t want to be – and as such, social equality does not need to impact on your life if you don’t wish it to. Many of us however would like to be equal members of society on every level – something which we believe is and should be a basic human right.

  6. Love you Magda but Marriage to me is about as useful as a man that shaves his body like a women. Never going to happen. Get over the gay marriage debate and sort out the Gay hate.

  7. Who knew. Good on her. It’s always better than rather announcing “i’m gay”, it’s just a passing comment.

Matt Bomer also technically came out over the weekend. It’s always been known he’s gay, but he’s never acknowledged it, but accepting an award he thanked his family which included his partner and kids.

  8. The introduction of same sex marriage bills made CBS news. I don’t think it made any major bulletins in Australia. But in America everyone is talking about it and they are making a lot of progress.

  9. I think it is a matter of choice. However I have a real problem with what I see as the hectro-fication of gays. I already have the right to love and historically that has happened irrespective of whether straight (strait) society has deemed it or not. I think the straight world learn a lot from the way historically gay men have lived their lives and contributed to society: Socrates, Da Vinci, Walt Whitman, Rimbaud et al. they didn’t need to be equal. I know this will cause outrage but it’s how I feel. I don’t need to be equal, I don’t need to be persecuted either; I just need to be me. But I don’t need to ape straight values and morales.
