Nine News boss resigns

Mark Calvert, Director of News and Current Affairs at Nine, has resigned his post after four years with the company.

Mark Calvert, Director of News and Current Affairs at the Nine Network has resigned his post after four years with the company.

“This is the best job in television, but it’s 24/7 and it has been for four years. It’s time to take a breath, and re-acquaint myself with my family. Any success I’ve had at Nine is all down to the best news and current affairs team in Australia. The future is in good hands with them,” said Calvert today.

British-born Calvert replaced John Westacott in 2009, following his earlier employ in 2008 as national director of news. His resignation comes at a time when Nine News is doing well in Sydney and Melbourne and Today and A Current Affair have set refreshes.

Managing Director of Nine, Jeffrey Browne, said: “I want to thank Mark for his contribution to the Nine Network, in particular the great success we have had with our News and Current Affairs results. Mark’s contribution to the success of the Today Show has also been important and I wish him and his family well in the future.”

CEO of Nine Entertainment Company David Gyngell said: “Mark has worked with us to rebuild our news and current affairs over the past four years. His achievements and efforts are much appreciated by all at the Network and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Darren Wick, Director of News in Sydney, will be Calvert’s replacement.

  1. Contract renegotiation time does focus the mind about just how all-consuming these jobs are. However it reflects badly on the senior management team when they lose someone who is part of the successful news team. There’s also a chance he’ll go to work for a direct competitor.

  2. Director of News would be the worst I imagine. Having to check updates on your phone/blackberry 24/7 would be annoying no matter how high the pay package. Especially for Nine who are constantly reminded about Seven’s national lead.
