SBS forum Insight, hosted by Jenny Brockie, returns for 2012 next week now at the new time of 8.30pm Tuesdays. Dateline will follow at 9.30pm.
The first topic for the year looks at whether Iran is a threat, and how escalation impacts on Israel.
Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but Israel and its allies think otherwise. And tension is escalating.
The United States is tightening sanctions, a move supported by Australia. The European Union has also agreed to ban Iranian oil imports and freeze the assets of Iran’s central bank, hoping to push them back into negotiations.
But Iran claims the sanctions will have no effect, calling them “psychological warfare”.
Should diplomacy fail, the U.S. and Israel have not ruled out military action, and Iran has warned of retaliation if an attack went ahead.
With Iran potentially on the verge of war, Insight will bring all voices into the one room – local Israelis and Iranians, pro and anti-regime, plus former representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Mossad, the national intelligence agency of Israel.
Jenny Brockie will host a dynamic and passionate discussion about the biggest geo-political story of the year, asking whether Iran is really a threat, whether the sanctions will achieve the intended result, and what might happen next.
