Rolled gold Madonna at Super Bowl

Madonna brings Hollywood Cleopatra to her Super Bowl show. But was she singing live?

Madonna turned on a spectacular mix of Hollywood Cleopatra and American cheerleaders in her half-time Super Bowl show.

Draped in gold, the singer began her show on a throne dragged in by Egyptian slaves (thanks Liz Taylor!). Singing Vogue, she was surrounded by dancers and gladiators.

From there her show rolled into a medley of other classic Madonna songs including Music, Like a Prayer and her new song Give Me All Your Luvin’.

Celebrating the football theme, she even brought the bleachers to centrestage, with acrobats, cheerleaders and dancers.

LMFAO and Cee-Lo Green also joined in the act.

As visuals it was an impressive act, but was Madonna singing live? It appeared to be a mix of both live and lip-syncing.

  1. Note: Suzi Quatro was on RocKwiz on Saturday October 01st on TV, so the same night the AFL GF was on (hahaha at me checking facts after the event, but can’t see a way to edit).

  2. Most definitely David totally agree on Suzi Quatro, would be a perfect fit, remember thinking she would be great when she was on RocKwiz in October last year (which would have been recorded around when the AFL GF was on), the Duet with Chris Cheney was even fantastic.

May have been even when the seeds of my thoughts of using the RocKwiz Orkestra started watching Suzi that night.

  3. Hey AFL, get Kylie Minogue to do this years Grand Final and show them how it is really done (and sung live), after all it looked like Madonna used Kylie’s Aphrodite set and costumes at the start.

Of course that cannot happen, due in the main to not having performers on the grounds surface anymore, which is easier on the Superbowl AstroTurf.

Though for me, if the AFL were really smart, they would get the RocKwiz Orkestra in and have a rotation of singers in and a finale of all together. With the artists RocKwiz have used over the years, it would not be hard for them to organise with some fair notice and give a good mix for fans young and old.

  4. In Brisbane we had this ridiculous situation where the Superbowl was live on ONE HD and on a 1 hour delay on TEN. What genius thought this was a good idea.

  5. I loved it! Also think that M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj deserve a mention (though Nicki clearly struggled most with the lip syncing) for their part in the show, this collaboration will do wonders for their careers.

  6. I thought it was an excellent half time show. And yeah she was lip synching, which isn’t the best, but was a great performance. Sure as hell beats Meatloaf who didn’t lip synch but perhaps should have. AFL, NRL this is how you put on a show.

  7. I think it was all lip-synched – there was too much autotune for it not to be! Still, an amazing show and shows why Madonna is still the queen, whether stans wanna accept it or not!

  8. she was also joined by Nicki Minaj & MIA

Was a very entertaining show… Agree she did sing and also lip sync…. but at least she did a better job of it than the Black Eyed Peas last year… their sound and lipsyncing was Terrible!!

  9. i will agree david it was a mixture of mime and live singing but what a spectacle it was. madge looked stunning and performed very well. a true visionary. loved it.

  10. Madonna was great but have to agree with you David… I too wondered if she was singing live. In some sections of the performance it did seem like she was lip-syncing.
