A bacon and egg roll for Rake extras?

Rake producers pull a casting ad asking Extras to work for food and no minimum salary.

It’s enough to make you want to call in ‘Cleaver Greene’ for Unfair Work Practices.

A casting advertisement for Extras for the second season of Rake was doing the rounds on the weekend until it was pulled by Producers.

On StarNow casting website, the ad said: “I need about 60 men and women – mainly over 40 to be the Public in a court case on the ABC show Rake. It will be filmed in Darlinghurst on 24th March from 7.30 to 10am unfortunately no pay but there will be a bacon and egg roll and a chance to watch some amazing actors in progress.”

Professional Extras are entitled to a minimum wage under Actor’s Equity rates, and it’s a little bit more than a bacon and egg roll.

ABC has confirmed that the ad was authentic from a production source, but also advised it was sent out “enthusiastically” before it was properly vetted and approved by Essential Media.

Upon learning of the error, Producers pulled the ad.

ABC advises that all Extras working on the day will be entitled to Equity rates (and presumably a bacon and egg roll).

  1. Looxury. We’d have given our back teeth for a bacon and egg roll when I was an extra, altho’ that would have made it difficult to eat.

  2. Yet another example of the true, parlous state of Australian TV production. Wise up people. If the minimum quota for kids show goes, that’s it for most of us.

  3. Work for nothing????? Yeah??? Like hell!!! It’s bad enough doing extras work when you are paid let alone doing it for nothing!! I should know….I do extras work casually!!
