Both Seven and Nine will screen the State Funeral for former AFL champ Jim Stynes, who lost his battle with cancer.

This will air at 11am next Tuesday, March 27.

SEVEN: (Melbourne)

AFL legend Jim Stynes will be farewelled with a state funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral this Tuesday, March 27.

The funeral will be broadcast live on Channel Seven.

The 45-year-old lost his brave and courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his wife Sam and children Matisse and Tiernan.

Seven News presenter Peter Mitchell will host the broadcast alongside Sandy Roberts. Rebecca Maddern will be at Federation Square and Nick McCallum will be at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Seven News Director Steve Carey said the city had lost a true gentleman.

“Jim was the embodiment of courage and compassion. Beyond that, his incredible fighting spirit and love of his family made him a great man far beyond the footy field. It’s a privilege to be able to bring Melburnians a way they can also say farewell to Jim Stynes.”

The funeral will be on Channel Seven live at 11am, with comprehensive coverage from the day during Seven News at 6pm.

The life of Australian Rules champion Jim Stynes will be celebrated in a state funeral to be broadcast on Tuesday, March 27 at 11.00am on Channel Nine.

45 year-old Stynes finally succumbed to cancer on Tuesday morning after a long, brave and resilient battle against the illness.

Stynes will be honoured with a state funeral to be held at what is expected to be a capacity-filled St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne.

The Nine News special presentation will be hosted by Peter Hitchener, Tony Jones and Alicia Loxley, with roving crowd reports from Brett McLeod.

Ian Paterson, Managing Director GTV9, today paid his respects to the Irish born Stynes.

“Jim was a valued friend and colleague to many at the Nine Network,” said Mr Paterson.

“He was a true inspiration to all, touching those he met with his strength, courage and leadership. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and dearest friends.”

Arriving in Australia in 1984 at the age of 18 as part of the Melbourne Football Club’s “Irish Experiment”, in 1991 Stynes became the first international player to win the Brownlow Medal.

In a stellar career, he went on to play 264 games for the Demons.

Stynes leaves behind wife Sam, daughter Matisse and son Tiernan.

Ten News will broadcast the funeral in a special presentation to be hosted by Mal Walden, Helen Kapalos and Stephen Quartermain from 10.30am on Tuesday morning (Victorian viewers).

Preceding the funeral, TEN will pay tribute to Jim’s sterling career on and off the field.

Dermot O’Brien, Director of Ten News says: ‘Jim Stynes was a gentleman on and off the field. He was a real hero to many and he will go down as a true fighter of great courage who never gave up. Jim Stynes will be remembered’.

Jim leaves behind his wife Sam, daughter Matisse and son Tiernan.

  1. I’m assuming this is just in Victoria. He was hardly a national figure. I have to admit that until all the news following his death, I’d never heard of him.
